Comments Thread For: Andre Ward Reveals He Had His Eye On Rodriguez

Andre Ward is finally set to make his return to the ring after being sidelined for a year due to a nagging shoulder injury that required surgery after his fight with Chad Dawson. It’s been a long road for Ward as his rehabilitation wasn’t easy but he’s finally back to 100%.

Normally a fighter in Ward’s situation would take a tune up fight to shake off the rust and test out the shoulder but instead he’s doing the opposite in taking on a fighter like Edwin Rodriguez. Rodriguez is fresh off winning a four man tournament in Monaco where he impressively defeated finalist Denis Grachev in merely one round and scored a nice six figure pay day to boot.

... So Ward wanted precisely Rodriguez!?!

Let's see: "... it looks like Ward didn’t have much choice because HBO shot down his attempts at setting up fights against Stanyslav Kastanov and Dimitri Sartison. ... Rodriguez is the opponent that HBO wanted Ward to fight."

What's left in this division after Rodriguez? Chavez Jr., Ward will only take that for the money. The Chavez Jr. fight would be his tune-up. He should add his name to the mix up there in the light-heavy division. So far it appears HBO has the top light-heavyweights in Kovalev, Dawson, and Stevenson. Ward is already linked with the network with commentating. Put his name in the mix with Kovalev and Stevenson for the future. He can test the waters in the light-heavy or cruiser division with Chavez Jr.

Ward himself said that Chavez Jr. is next... Ward wants the fight at 168, with no kidding about extra-weight games from Jr... Team Jr. still silent on this...

Their silence may come from the fact that Jr. will be exposed again and that will be the last big money fight he will have. All fights after that will be off of namesake. Jr. is a C+ or B level fighter at best. Ward's resume speaks for itself. He doesn't have to lower his standards as Vera had to. Jr. would be a walk in the park for Ward. Chavez Jr. failed to beat an A level blown up Jr. Middleweight in Martinez. Put his name next to Kovalev or Stevenson and he gets taken out. Other than Ward, Froch is his only other payday. Chavez Jr. and Froch would be interesting, although I believe Froch would tear him up.

I think that Ward's dream and Chavez Jr's dream are not the same -- Jr. would rather "fight" Bika for his belt...

Pretty sure Ward agreed to Rodriguez at the outset before those two were brought up, but Edwin stalled on the September date.

Jr. just got shellacked by a middleweight fighting at light-heavy lol.... Frock, Ward, Bute, Dirrell, Kessler, etc... all destroy Jr. Shoot, after watching what Vera did to Jr. I now think Canelo can move up 2-3 weight classes just to embarrass Jr. and collect a fat paycheck and then come back down to 154/160. Jr. got EXPOSED!!!

Rodriguez is no joke. He is a solid contender and Ward has to come prepared to be able to beat this dude.

He might not be at the level of the top guys but he is a risk to take after the surgery and layoff
