You do realize that Jessie Owen's and Usain Bolt's gold medal winning 100m times were less than a second different right?
Owens 10.3 seconds
Bolt 9.6 secondsComment

That's not the same thing.. Boxing is a sport that is different from all those Track/Field and team sports. Boxing is a character driven fighting artform with skills honed specifically to hurt. You need to be stronger mentally in Boxing more so than any other sport and I don't think that's up for debate.
Track is a sport that basically allow you to run in a straight line as fast as you can. Of course in track... Bolt is going to beat the old timers because he's not getting hit in the face... Combat is something that deals with the intangibles a lot more than basketball or football.Comment

Frazier was taller and had a longer reach. Tyson weighed 5-10 pounds more than Frazier, which is a negligible amount at heavyweight. They were basically the same size.
As for the thread topic, many of the fighters you listed as old-school bums had overlapping careers with your new-age greats. George Foreman was able to win the title in two different decades. Tyson's prime ended over 20 years ago. Joe Louis had tough fights with guys who were at their best during the 20s.
Boxing has had periods of evolution, but by and large it's stayed the same. Fighters train by sparring, hitting the bags, jumping rope, and running.
Heavyweights are bigger, but they're also slower. And there's nothing that suggests that they hit any harder than guys from previous generations. Basically, a heavyweight is a heavyweight.
"Modern training and nutrition" was supposed to give us heavyweights who moved like Ali, defended like Johnson, and punched like Louis. Where are they?Last edited by SBleeder; 09-29-2013, 05:43 PM.Comment

According to the nitwits in this thread: http://www.boxingscene.com/forums/sh...606262&page=13
... it's all about who has the biggest ankles and wrists.
BRB "training" my wrists. :bukkake:Comment

We are taking about boxing not running, there is no comparison.
As I said before, lifting weights, being able to bench press 400lbs will not make you a better boxer, nor does it mean it'll make you punch harder or faster. There are numerous examples of this in boxing.
We have cruisers saying a small MW like GGG hits like a HW, a toothpick like prime Pavlik dominating guys physically superior like JT and Miranda, Bradley built like a tank with no power, Cunningham dropping a guy as big as Fury, Sanders had the physique of your average Joe and dominated the hell of Wlad who's built like a body builder. The list goes on and on.
What Ali-Frazier did was incredible, screw HW's, how many guys in boxing today could do what they did in a war in the conditions they were in? The closest I've seen was Ibeabuchi-Tua and that was in an air conditioned arena.Comment
