Floyd has no business at 160 but the thought of history should be tempting. 5 lineal titles! 3 of which would have been in the original six weight classes... Whew! A feat like that would probably never be recreated in our life timeComment

Exactly. You get it. It is why I made note of the size gap for the guys who almost did it. We are talking a guy who was great at 130 early on. going to Middle would have to be the right fight. And Michael Nunn reestablished lineage when he beat Kalambay. It was vacant after Toney moved up, until BHop.That defeats the purpose, and the whole point of this article. Fighters have gone from low weights to win the middleweight title, Duran famously doing it coming up from 118 initially and becoming the oldest middleweight titlist ever at that stage. But, while he beat the guy who beat Tommy Hearns, it still wasn't for the lineal title. The lineal title hadn't been reestablished by that stage yet, and I don't think it as until Hopkins came on.
Anyway, the point being that with Martinez clearly fading now would be the time to get to him and make some history by being the first 5 division lineal titlist, and the first lineal lightweight and lineal middleweight titlist.
Considering he's not having to fight a prime Hagler or Hopkins, its an incredible, historic chance that he should jump at. Martinez, and thus the lineal title, is there for the taking. I don't think there's ever been a chance like this before, with such a weak/faded lineal champ there for the taking for a former 130/135 champ.Last edited by crold1; 09-19-2013, 05:49 AM.Comment

Floyd could win a middleweight title, and it would be a great way to end his career. He should do it. It's not like he'd be facing the biggest weight disadvantage of all time.Comment

Cliff, only a few people actually read the article and digested it.Exactly. You get it. It is why I made note of the size gap for the guys who almost did it. i often wonder the personal and social lives of the people on here who say someone gets "hurt" over someone elses post
cmon maaaaan. get a life - its the interwebs. no one here is hurt, or are they??

I like your arguments here but I have to differ on which middleweight opponent would be better for Floyd to face.I just don't see Mayweather fighting at the Middleweight division anytime soon, unless there's a catchweight of at least 156 lbs because he is barely fighting above the 147 lbs weight limit to challenge these opponents at the 154 lbs Junior middleweight division.
Moreover, of the current Middleweight names being mentioned, I believe that he matches up better against Gennady Golovkin than Sergio Martinez because he wouldn't be able to box with Floyd because he is too slow and is more of come forward slugger/brawler type fighter who likes to engage on the inside. Mayweather would see his punches coming from a mile away and counter them.
As far as Sergio Martinez is concerned, Mayweather will never fight him, because it's a very bad style match up for him. Martinez a southpaw; Is more of a pure boxer/counter puncher with fast hand and foot speed who likes to fight off the back foot while moving his legs. He'll be jabbing and sticking Floyd from a distance; Forcing Money to come out of his Philly shell to generate some kind of offense and that could be dangerous as he runs the risk of getting caught by a punch he doesn't see against a stronger and one of the best counter punchers in the fight game like Maravilla.
Martinez jumps all over the ring and relies heavily on footwork, jabs and timing - all of which are in undeniable decline and pale in comparison to Floyd's.
GGG will impose his size, strength and skill on Floyd - speed and ring generalship aren't his forte.
GGG will be prime and 100% next year while Martinez will be that much closer to 40yrs old in 2014. Most importantly, the risk/reward ratio is so favorable right now and GGG cannot compare because he doesn't hold the historical middleweight world title and hasn't be a fixture on ESPN & CNN/SI for several years now like MartinezComment

Great article
I believe there needs to be more stories out there to push a bout like this. I think that floyd is too good for his own good. Fights with Khan or Garcia should be thrown back in their face by boxing fans. Those guys would not even give Floyd a challenge. I will not buy any floyd fights unless he is going to give the world legitimate challenges to his "0." To me that is fighting Manny, GGG, Martinez. That's about all I see giving him a challenge. Floyd is the best right now. The best ever is still up in the air.Comment
