Always good to read-as usual.by Cliff Rold - The mind wanders…
After his latest display of fistic supremacy, after adding another alphabet title and fourth lineal title to his ever lengthening list of accomplishments, reigning Welterweight and Jr. Middleweight king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO) is where he’s always been.
Victorious.
Looking for what’s next.
Sometimes, it’s fun to imagine a boxing world unencumbered by network and promotional issue, to dream of a more perfect world. The wake of Mayweather-Alvarez is one of those times.
A select list of names is being thrown around as possible future foes for Mayweather. Amir Khan and Danny Garcia are the most prominent. To be sure, those are both fine enough names in a world that is just good enough.
In a more perfect world, an unencumbered world, there is one name that should stand out above all others. There is one achievement sitting nakedly out in the open waiting to be seized.
The achievement is the Middleweight Championship of the World. The still reigning lineal, legitimate Middleweight Champion is Argentina’s Sergio Martinez. [Click Here To Read More]
But one little thing. Ceferino Garcia was at the very end of his career, with over 150 fights under his belt. And although Armstrong was only 140 lbs, Garcia himself wasn't much of a middleweight at 150. I recall reading the history of this when a kid. Armstrong of course, was a physical phenomenon of the kind we have rarely if ever seen and can't be judged by ordinary standards. He gobbled up fights like a goose gobbles corn.
In the time that it took Garcia to finish his career over the next 5 years with 9-10 fights, Armstrong had, If I recall somewhere around 40-45 fights, not exactly sure. but I know that Garcia was nearly finished. I remember reading that both of them retired within a few weeks of each other. It was in a "believing in co-incidences" booklet. And the 'title" they fought for was recognised only by California. Nowhere else in the world. So, to me it sees that it was pure advertising schtik, as well as a great achievement by Armstrong.Comment

Should Bradley beat Marquez i'd love to see Mayweather vs BradleyGood luck to Mayweather and Showtime selling Floyd vs. anybody under 160 for his next few fights. This current crop of welterweights and junior welterweights is ridiculously under-matched and out-gunned for a Floyd fight. Nor do they have the kind of fanatic fanbase that would buy the fight anyway despite the lack of competition.
Either he fights at 160 on PPV or nobody is buying. I've seen plenty of his own fans say the same thing. Or he can just fight on regular CBS against any of these no-hopers and probably pull a decent rating.
It was ****** of Showtime to sign such a ridiculous deal with Mayweather in the first place knowing that they only had one fight (Alvarez) that was a guaranteed sell. Nobody wants to see Mayweather vs. Khan, Alexander, Bradley, or Ortiz.Comment

You stole my thunder lol
Made a thread about gloyd vs sergio after the fight. Makes perfect sense for floyd though its not on the best terms for an ailing sergio but money is money. Losing a decision to floyd is better then coming back unhealthy and getting kod by ggg

This is a ridiculous artcle and was a waste of time. Floyd will not even consider moving up to 160 and understandably so. The little guy can barely keep own enough weight to make 154 and it's unbelievable that some of you think him making 160 is plausible, just unbleivable.Comment

I suppose it makes sense for Sergio financially. I'm not sure what the stipulations of his HBO contract are (if it's still extant) but for FMJ PPV type $s he could possibly take a financial hit on it and still come out on top.You stole my thunder lol

If the aging Maravilla that we saw against Murray were to come out against FMJ, even at 160, it is possible that Floyd could become the lineal champion.
Therein lies my issue with this. With most of the action, and the generally accepted heir apparent (GGG) fighting on HBO for Floyd to carry the lineal over to the weaker SHO middleweight contention would be something of a travesty IMO.
In fact, with Floyd unlikely to defend at 160 it could pretty much be the end of the direct lineage started by BHop after beating Trinidad in 2001. And with the current cold war and the ongoing 'alphabet' resistance to unifiers it could be a long while before we see another.Last edited by Citizen Koba; 09-18-2013, 03:41 AM.Comment

There is no way a guy who weighs in and comes to the ring at 150 lbs for a Jr MW fight could or should fight at 160 lbs.Comment
