What Dibella is not understanding is that Team Cotto is ultimately the one making the decisions. HBO was not the first to approach the Cotto team. It's the opposite. It's a case of Team Cotto not being honest with Dibella.

One thing is clear to me. These networks don't make huge money off of boxing.

DiBella badly wants to secure Martinez vs Cotto, however Martinez's contract with HBO is up after his next fight. let's say Martinez wins.

you know he'll bolt to secure a fight with Mayweather or Canelo on Showtime. Martinez is at a point where he's declined enough Mayweather or Canelo would fight him. and why not fight him? if he beats Cotto he'll still be the lineal champ.

should Mayweather fight him at a 154.5 catchweight and beat him he'd be lineal champ at middleweight. totally cementing his legacy or if Canelo beats him it sets up a rematch with Mayweather.

HBO wants Martinez vs Golovkin but if Martinez has the option of Canelo or Mayweather you know damn well who DiBella would choose.

HBO has invested a lot in hyping Golovkin and if Martinez were to leave it'd really put a damper on that.

I understand the point of the article . . . basing not even hearsay, but deductions from hearsay . . . to make a claim that isn't a big deal in the first place. If HBO prefers to work with Top Rank per Miguel Cotto, SO WHAT.

Cotto had no preference on who did what. HBO came to DiBella with idea of Cotto-Martinez, not the other way around. He came to them with the idea of doing Cotto-Rodriguez and than matching him with Martinez. HBO said no, they rejected Cotto vs. anybody other than Martinez. Then HBO went to Top Rank with DiBella's two-fight idea, and Top Rank in turn called Cotto. End of story.

No contract, no future options to anyone. And don't be shocked when Canelo-Cotto takes place on Showtime in 2014.

Here (10:00 minute mark) Steve Kim said he was told Top Rank signed a 3 fight deal with Cotto.

There's also a video here on boxingscene where Arum said they signed Cotto. It would be strange to use word "signed" for just one fight.

Sergio is not even physically able to fight this year, so having preliminary discussions about a fight pending Miguel Cotto defeating someone in October is not relevant to what Sergio, DiBella, and HBO discuss among themselves. As I understand it, since Cotto was a free agent, any promoter can come up to Cotto and offer him fights, including Dibella. Dibella tried making a Cotto and Rodriguez fight (with Gaby Penagaricano's consent I imagine), but HBO said no. Then TR did the same, and HBO said yes. The issue has nothing to do with Cotto controlling his own career. It's HBO offering money when TR wanted to promote a Cotto tuneup, but not when Dibella wanted to do the same.
