After what he did to Canelo tonight, how will CBS/Sho/Goldenboy with their full promotional/advertising weight try to sell an opponent as a credible threat again? How will they get people interested and be willing to shell out money on the ever increasing PPV prices?
I mean, this isn't Wlad Klitschko (a favorite in every fight, with virtually nobody expected to beat him, winning subjectively boring fights). All he is bound by is his Belts and their contenders. All he has to do is stay active, even when nobody thinks that his next opponent(s) has a shot at beating him.
But Floyd? He is bound by PPV buys, not Title contenders. I can only imagine a substantial amount of PPV ordering fans walking away and will not be back for another go-around. I don't even see anybody on the horizon to get excited about at the moment. Maybe if Manny wins, some of that hype will come back (but with the cynicism that the fight just can't get made for one reason or another, forget it.). Mattysse? Forget it. Bradley? Forget it. Garcia? I don't think so. Khan? Possible, only if Floyd decides to fight in the UK and create some buzz over there (a change in scenery from Las Vegas, would liven things up a bit), but even that isn't really a sellable fight.
Perhaps if Broner turned on 'The Money Team' and went on a big social campaign, berating Floyd, we would have something. He is after all right there and it could be a Welterweight unification fight. It could sort of be like Tommy Gun breaking away from his teacher Rocky's shadow, and calling him out to a fight. But, I doubt it.
Maybe, CBS/Sho/Golden will just force Floyd to come off his high horse and reduce his inflated, guaranteed purse, so they can profit too. Because the next event won't get the same kind of hype/buzz as this one did. Canelo/Manny are and were it.
