Huge step down for Fortuna to be fighting in nowhereville against a TBA instead of a major network slot against a top fighter.

Fortuna was tested when he took a step up versus a second-tier Cuban fighter. Javier didn't pass. Him and his team need to go back to the drawing board before taking another step up. The kid has talent. They dodged a bit of a bullet with Franco. They can't afford to let Fortuna get smashed versus a higher level fighter. Javier had been talking about Gamboa prior to the Franco bout. Yuri would stop the kid's aspirations in its tracks.

Yeah, there were a couple of little interviews with Fortuna here where Javier was calling for Gamboa. That seems to have stopped after the draw with Franco. lol

I agree on all counts. Fortuna is young and talented. He can't get ahead of himself. That encounter with Franco might've been the best thing that happened to him. He managed to squeak by with a draw, but the specter of a loss might've brought the kid back to reality. It's a tough road, even for a talented athlete.

the draw was the best thing for him im glad he squeezed by with a draw becuz networks and fans are so fickle now-a-days they will right you off if your not undefeated which sucks

I thought Franco did enough to win, but the fight was so uninspired that a draw seemed fair enough. I would've been angered if Luis took the loss, though. Teddy Atlas went on one of his patented FNF rants at the end, like Fortuna was robbed. The fans watching at home saw it my way.

In any event, I agree, too much emphasis is put on a "zero" nowadays. So, in a way, I'm glad for Javier that he caught a break. He's not your run-of-the-mill talent. It seems to me that he needs a suitable trainer. Guys like Fortuna are too often left to rely on their natural ability. That may work against soft opposition, but it's not so easy against skilled, experienced fighters. The fact that Javier was already talking about Gamboa tells you he was believing his own hype.

I don't think Fortuna is hype at all. I just think he is still very raw and needs more time to refine his craft. Perhaps, he needs a different trainer who can help him get rid of his wilderness. If Fortuna starts to really work on his defense and how to place his punches he could be something. The key is to fight smart with little aggresiveness. He has the talent as some of you have mention but he has a lot of work to do. Perhaps, his current trainer Sarmiento is not a good match for him. I am not sure. But I hope they help him along the way. He appears to be a diamond in the rough.

At the moment, Javier is hype. He just squeaked by with a draw versus a good fighter, but no one that should give Fortuna that much trouble if he was as good as he and his people think. I agree with everything else you say, though. The kid could be something, I believe. But, at the moment, that's all conjecture. In his first step up, Javier didn't pass the test. Until he beats someone good, he's just another kid with potential.
