Ricky Burns returned home on Monday after surgery to mend a broken jaw sustained in Saturday night's controversial WBO lightweight title fight against Raymundo Beltran, according to the champion's promoter Eddie Hearn.

The Coatbridge fighter, 30, suffered a clean break in the second round against the Mexican at the SECC in Glasgow but despite being on the back foot for much of the night he retained his belt when the judges awarded a draw.

Hearn subsequently claimed that Burns, who had titanium plates inserted in his jaw, faced a battle to recover sufficiently to box again.
