Comments Thread For: Beltran: Burns Protected as Investment, Referee Terrible

Ricky Burns retained his WBO lightweight title after a draw with Raymundo Beltran in Glasgow on Saturday. The Scot suffered a dislocated jaw in the second round and had to get up from a knockdown in the eighth in his defence against the tough Mexican. One judge awarded the fight 115-112 to Burns. Another made Beltran a 115-113 winner and the third saw it 114-114.

But even the partisan home crowd could scarcely seem to believe the result in a fight that Beltran seemed to dominate throughout. The 30-year-old champion was making the fourth defence of the title he won at the end of 2011 by beating Australian Michael Katsidis on points. The 32-year-old Mexican's record moved to 28 wins, six defeats and one draw. Burns, a former WBO super-featherweight champion, now stands at 36-3-1. [Click Here To Read More]

Burns also had that super sweet headlock for half the fight. I thought he was taking Beltran for a walk because he'd walk with Beltran in a head lock for a good second or two

Couldn't believe he got away with that! But the worst one was when he'd clinch and the ref would go in and he'd throw scuffing uppercuts and try to land elbows or hold with one hand and throw shots to the back of the head! Dirty fighter.

I've been a big fan of Burns for a while and thought that his last fight was just a rare, bad night at the office and that he would return to the decent, high-tempo boxing that has served him well.

But although he was brave last night and saw off a lot of pressure, he did lose the fight and Beltran can feel rightly pissed off by that decision. The home fans looked more than a little embarassed by that call and I think Ricky needs to do the decent thing and give Ray another shot.

I'd be very surprised if he got another shot

I feel so sorry for Beltran. Burns didn't win a single round and should have been DQ'd if the ref was doing him job.

              Beltran 120-107

Don't know how those judges sleep at night

Nothing worse than seeing a journeyman robbed in an upset when a world title is on the line.

The absolute worst thing to see in this sport.

These type of ONE SIDED Judging situations really destroy a great sport and frustrate the fans. Don't bet on a rematch. Burns is surrounded by creeps and if they went this far then one can bet that they won't do whats fair...ever. If Burns or The WBO had any B@LL's they would do the right thing and step up but thats doubtful. Regardless, Burns will NEVER get respect from the boxing community after this mishap. He is NOT the real WBO Lightweight Champ...Ray Beltran is and the World knows it!
