  • Do boxing gloves cause more brain damage than bare knuckles?

If so and this is well known why are modern officials still allowing the use of modern boxing gloves?

Surely the brain is more important than the face or hands?

Also learning to block etc with gloves also makes boxing less effective in real life where you have no big gloves to block with.

Why dont they just wrap the hands and have a glove that stops eye/ thum pokes and has the bearest minimal of padding and size. Like an olden days boxing glove!?

Also why continue the use of head gear which again protects the face but injures the brain more?

You damage your face it can be repaired. If it cant be repaired it dosnt have to ruin your life.

You damage your hands they can be repaired. If they cant it dosnt ruin your life.

You damage your brain too much you die, you can also loose a significant amount of life span, you can alter the mood and character of a person with dmage, you can be put into a coma, all types of things can go wrong with brain injuries and these things ruin lives!

Its pretty simple so why do they keep allowing brain trauma but not allowing hand or face damage?

I mean the messed up with creating head gear and overly padded gloves, why do they delay in making a change? The least they can do after damaging so many people is to put right their wrong and fast.

gloves really only serve to protect the fighters hands, and slightly cushion the blows to the opponent

brain damage (this is such a vague term btw) in combat sports as well as full contact sports like American football occurs through repeated sub concussive impacts to the head.

the most common form of brain trauma/disease due to these repeated sub concussive hits is CTE. this is when a protein layer starts to form on and around damaged areas of the brain, this protein actually causes cell death resulting in the symptoms we all hear about (memory loss, slurred speech, suicidal thoughts)

one punch KOs actually don't really do much long term damage to the brain

it's repeated abuse that certain fighters take (Provodnikov, Katsidis, Rios, Margarito, etc) which causes CTE

Its pretty simple so why do they keep allowing brain trauma but not allowing hand or face damage?
probably because if all fighters boxed bare knuckle, they'd all have broken hands and would only fight once every 12-18 months

did you actually put any thought into this?

What you've just described is some of the most popular modern day pro fight gloves. Everlast MX, Grant, Cleto Reyes all have minimal padding over the knuckle.

This is the most comprehensive take on it, good post!

Although I don't believe Rios or Margs or showing these signs! It's crazy that some fighters after one or two tough fights show symptoms (Meldrick Taylor, Wilfred Benitez etc!) and guys that have taken huge abuse over a continued period dont (Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basillio etc) that aspect has always fascinated me!

Gloves were never designed to stop head trauma. They were implemented to protect a fighter's hands. As for head hear, there is no evidence that they are effective in decreasing brain damage.

Boxing is more dangerious than MMA though, with the countdown your able to recover and continue to get punishment but in MMA once someone is hurt the oponent goes for the kill for KO or TKO always. This means overal fighters in MMA get less punishment in the head than boxers.
