Comments Thread For: Andre Ward's Trainer Reacts To Sanchez's Comments

Virgil Hunter, the trainer for WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14KOs), was very surprised when he saw a recent story on BoxingScene.com where Abel Sanchez, the trainer of IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs), was critical of Ward's discussions with HBO regarding the opponent for his next televised appearance.

Ward, inactive since last September and coming back from shoulder surgery, was looking to face someone durable but not necessarily an A-level opponent. Opponents like former champion Dmitry Sartison were rejected by HBO. And discussions to secure Edwin Rodriguez have stalled over money. Ward has a tentative date of November 16 to return. I think people don't understand that Television deals are not about a boxer's skill. It is about more about name recognition and fighting style. That is why Rigondeaux can't get a fight on HBO, he is the most boring, yet effective, fighter out there. Ward isn't exactly leaving people on the edge of their seats either.

It's a business and they have to do what they think will make them money.

            Its simple

Most of the prime HBO fighters are pissed about the Cotto - Delvin fight because Cotto is basically getting a free $ 3 million license fee to fight a bum, so other fighters who are HBO guys are saying why can't I get the same treatment, ie Ward. The difference is Cotto provides the highest ratings next to Chavez jr where Ward doesn't get good ratings at all, so they want him to fight someone marketable.

HBO knows that if they give Ward the fight he's proposing the ratings will tank, especially if Showtime counter programs which they most likely will

I don't like Virgil Hunter much, but that reply was spot-on. Krusty Sanchez needs to stay in his lane.

I think he's legit but until he beats Sergio Martinez or an American like Peter Quillin certain people aren't going to give him a pass.

Golovkin fighting B and C level fighters is still entertaining cause he knocks them out and it's entertaining to see his development. Hunters comparsion is wrong cause Ward is not in that phase of his career and is not a knockout artist so he cannonly entertain in that way. He needs to take on real challenges to sell.

What do you mean certain people? Anybody with a brain can see that he has one good victory Murray, that's it Rosado,Ishida,Proska and Stevens are pedestrian fighters at best.
