I've made a similar remark in the past. Some of the guys you mentioned fight under different promoters, so they wouldn't be all together. However, a card with Rigo and Gamboa as co-headliners, for example, and a few younger Cuban talents under them, would do very well.Comment

he got the Donaire fight because he make sure it was on the 2 fight contract he signed with TR, he would not sign if Nonitos name wasn't there...Point is, you can't always blame promoters. Sergio Martinez is still not a draw on his own outside of Argentina despite of the efforts Dibella made, ie, getting his boxer involved in the bullying campaign, etc.
Arum has actually done well exposing Rigo. He got the Donaire fight, for one. He was in the undercards in one of the Pacquiao megafights. Something Donaire was dying to be in. He also got his first $1 million in his last fight. Schaefer had the more exciting Mares for a long time before the KO and never reached the same level.Comment

Tell me a little more, bro. How was the show? What did you think of the casino? What was the crowd reaction for Rigo like?Comment

Honestly, dude, I wouldn't be surprised if Arum truly believed Donaire would knock Rigo out, like a lot of others did. Now he's stuck with a guy who's proven himself but has no drawing power.Comment

The only problem the Cubans have is that they are too good, promoters should put their cards in their hometowns in this case Miami, you do this and show the event on tv and money will come in, I didn't heard that Casamayor wasn't a draw or Hurtado etc..., this is something that the same f44kin promoters has come out with to blackballing these kids...I've made a similar remark in the past. Then release him or do your job as a promoter, nonitos was in 4 boring fights one after the other and now he is fighting darchynan, common, why didn't he offer the fight to GR? It will had been a good scrap because VD is a brawler and would make Rigondeaux look good...Comment

It makes a big difference. If Mares/Rigondeaux or Santa Cruz/Rigondeaux was a realistic fight any network would jump at it in a heartbeat. You have to consider the lack of opponents. I don't think its as simple as "having trouble getting on a network". Because there are several fights out there that networks would fight over to showcase.
Second, you have to look at the minimum guarantee from his contract with Top Rank. It's too high for his lack of popularity and drawing power.
Third, selling tickets is a problem, period, not a Rigondeaux problem. Look at some talented American world champions that can't draw flies:
Chad Dawson
Devon Alexander (unless somebody fights him in STL)
Timothy Bradley
Austin Trout
Peter Quillin
None of those fighters can even headline fights and have to 1)Travel, 2)Co-Feature/Fight on undercards. Fighters that are selling tickets have longevity, are from countries where boxing is popular or named Adrien Broner.
Then you have to factor in the lower weight classes: Donaire wasn't doing big gates until he fought Arce in Texas and we know who was the A-side in that fight. Mares isn't doing big gates either. And these fighters are from countries with big boxing support. What other world champions below 126 are getting dates and selling out arenas in the U.S.?
The answer you want is "Rigo is a boring Cuban" but its a LOT more to it than that.Comment

Wish I could give you a first hand view but I didn't attend.
According to people I know that went it was a full house and Rigo was received with great enthusiasm. Can't believe that place finally re-opened after so many years of debate and political bs.Comment

This is my thought. They know it will make money. Right now! But , you know how when you long for something more and more its twice as better when you get it? I think If they market him better and longer and build him up even more...a Home town fight in Miami will make big bucks. People will be willing to pay more. Just Cuban fans isnt gonna cut it. They need other fans as well. Better believe a fight in Miami is in the making. But with who and when and the build up all play a part. One thing they dont wanna do is put him in with a club fighter and something bad happen in Miami. He still just 12 and 0 with a couple of good names on his resume. Just a few years ago i was watching him in the Fontainbleau Hotel, on Miami beach. why rush it?Comment
