Makavelli, just when I've come to the conclusion that nothing can surprise me....something like this comes out.

That's alright though, I guess. Hopefully those who become boxing fans and not just Floyd fans will, in let's say 10 years, say "WTF was I thinking??"

I mean hell, I was a Muhammad Ali fan before I was a real boxing fan. He led me to the sport; and I loved it so much I dove into the deep end and found the rabbit hole goes much deeper than I originally thought. Maybe the same will happen to the poor saps who think the article's the truth.

    I try to be optimistic.

I promise I'm not penalizing him for his personality. At 135, he beat the best. At 140? At 147? Well, Zab Judah was quality. Baldomir was a necessity. Hatton was quality. Then what?

People forget the Welterweight division was swarming with talent when Floyd made the leap up. I was excited as hell because I thought, "Here we go! Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Hagler, Benetiz, Palomino all over again!" Then my vision fizzled like a damp firecracker.

When Floyd beat Judah and Baldomir here was what was out there: Paul Williams, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, ....seems like there was another; but the name escapes me. Could be my Sometimers again.

Anyway, he fought none of them. All of them quality match ups, all of them marketable, all of them would have raised his status. What does he do?

Well, I could say what I think he did; but we'll just say what he didn't do. He didn't fight them. All he fought was Old Oscar....and had a tough time of it, even though I had him winning by 4 rounds, I was in the minority at the bar.

Soon after he decisions Old Oscar, this little guy who'd warred wit Morales, Marquez, and Barrera (top names) moves up AND DESTROYS OLD OSCAR. Now, sure, you could say Floyd softened him up for Manny just like you could say he softened up Hatton; but I would say Manny's hands had more to do with those wins than did Mayweather's cutting remarks.

Either way, it's a moot point in terms of marketability and promotion. After Manny beat those two opponents better than Floyd had, the stage was set. The megafight was here. Once again I said, "Here it Comes!"........poof.

And ten years of BS later, here we are. I'm not hating on Floyd. I'm just calling it like I see it.

        • FMJ, RJJ, Tyson, Zags in the top ten.

          Sounds legit.

but he does. so what if he has been stopped?

duran and ray leonard have been stopped. That didnt stop them from having a better resume than floyd.

                • spot on,its funny cuz real boxers, real organisations, and real sanctioning bodys and ppl that actully mean something in the sport always have positiive stuf to say about floyd, its only the lil internet hating ass dudes postong stuff online about him negativly.Hell retire top 3 ATG,HOF,and goes down as the best of his era withnobody even coming close.By the time hes fully retired, there will be arguments if hes the greatest of all time or right behind it

                  • Interesting list - I think Mayweather is up there in the top 10 but no way does he beat Leonard and a Dela Hoya who came out of retirement took him all the way and I had it a draw on my card so I would say a prime De la hoya beats Mayweather a prime Duran beats Mayweather a prime Hagler beats Mayweather.

DLH has an incredible list of fighters he has faced. Tremendous.

But I don't see anybody putting him in their top 10 list.

                      Hagler vs Mayweather?

                      Mayweather couldn't stop Marquez.

The fuck is he going to do against a 160 pound Hagler?

There are simple mismatches through boxing history to relegate the next persons ranking of another's null and void.

This isn't a knock on FMJ, by the way.

But in no fucking alternate universe is Mayweather big enough to mess with that.
