Olympic gold medal winner Yuriorkis Gamboa wants to follow in the footsteps of Ultiminio 'Azúcar' Ramos and Ángel 'Mantequilla' Nápoles by living and fighting in Mexico. Azucar and Napoles left Cuba in the early 1960s and made their careers in Mexico. Gamboa had recently visited Mexico and met with promoter Pepe Gomez of Cancun Boxing to discuss the possibility of resuming his career in the country.
Gamboa (23-0, 16KOs) sees a lot of advantages to taking the road to Mexico. Besides holding a meeting with Gomez, Gamboa also met with officials of the World Boxing Council and appeares interested in fighting for one of their championships.
