  • Why don't refs give 10 counts anymore?

I was really torn between who to root for in the Mares vs Gonzales fight. I love both of those guys and knew Gonzales was a very dangerous opponent because of his power and experience.

When Mares was hit with that left hook, and got up, the ref let it go and then he got knocked down again.

My thing is, why in the *** don't refs give 10 counts anymore? Allow Mares the right to get up if he can. I'm not saying he would have, or he wouldn't have but there was like 8 seconds left in the round and giving him a 10 count would have ended the fight.

Instead, the ref counts to about 5, stops the fight and then HOLD MARES DOWN from getting up!?!

What do you have to lose to just count to 10? I don't get it. What if Mares gets up, the round ends and then he has 1 minute to recover in the corner? It could have been a completely different fight.

Props to Gonzales but I'm tired of these refs just stopping fights. Give the ***in 10 count, if the guy is out cold like Pac or Hatton were, then I understand but Mares was trying to get up.

I know what you mean, but in regards to Mares to be fair the ref was close to stopping it afterthe first KD. He looked at mares very hard and aactually did him a favor by giving him a lot of time to walk towards him. I think the ref wanted to give him a chance. And then mares used no defense, was just wailing arm pumches in desperation with head looking down, basically not protecting himself at all. He goes down again thats all the ref needed to see.

I probably need to rewatch the fight but if memory serves, Mares had an absent look in his eyes, I don't recall him getting up for a few minutes. No pasa nada.

I completely agree, and was thinking the exact same thing. And this is only the latest such instance. IMO there is no good reason for it. It's really what the 10-count is for, for crying out loud!

He didn't get up because he didn't want to and there was no absent look in his eyes. Watch the fight again, you see Mares trying to get up, ref counts to 3 and then places a hand on Mares shoulder and pushes him back, claiming Mares looked out of it. Yet the moment Mares feels the refs hand on his shoulder he looks shocked, shocked because he knows the fight is over, meaning he knows full well where he is and what has happened. He was not absent. He knew exactly what was happening.

I was rooting for Gonzo too but also thought it was ****** when Mares didn't try and tie up, I literally shouted through my big screen telling it to clinch for half a minute before I realized how silly I sounded with the slide door open and half the neighborhood listening to me. Mares will take away alot from this loss.

Also, adding to the point that OP, SS, and I are making, there was only ten seconds left in the round (!). Mares is in excellent shape, and I would not have put a significant recovery between rounds past him.

I thought the way he handled this in the post-fight interview was very classy. Made me like him more (and I already did).

I agree, they should give them the 8 count and evaluate them if they get up whether they can continue or not. Mares did not look bad at all IMO so i dont see why he stopped the fight at 3 and wouldnt let him get up

I'm not a huge fan of Mares but I totally agree with you, the guy handled himself like a class act.

I just remembered something, that KD in the closing seconds of the 4th round in the Ali/Cooper fight, Ali definitely looked out of it, imagine if the ref had stopped counting at 3? ? ? The fight would have been over with a second left in the 4th round. We would never have seen Ali v Liston....and the rest is history lol

                    Horrible assessment

Mares was looking down trying to get up..he was ROCKED from the first knockdown and like he admitted didn't have his feet under him..his eyes were fine, he was looking down to get his feet under him and get up calmly to hope the ref doesn't stop it for him flopping over

When the ref waved it off he looked at him and said "No I'm fine!" ..

Don't doubt Mares' heart by claiming he wanted out in the 1st round..he could've been saved by the bell..but I doubt the 60sec break would've been enough for him to recover
