Nothing to be bummed about. The undefeated card is played too much in this era of boxing. Leonard, Robinson, Duran, Ali, Pep and almost every other ATG in the history of the sport have L's on their record.

And Jhonny Gonzalez is a criminally slept on fighter. He has 8 losses but:

4 were early in his career
3 he was winning on the cards
1 was a TD because of cuts

If he finishes on his feet a couple of those times think about where he would be legacy wise right now.

It ****** that he lost that goes without saying but what felt like **** was how he lost.

      Damn that ish was bad.

Yeah undefeated is overrated, you probably have a 0.000000000001% chance of staying undefeated if you fight the best competition.

Remembering when Larry Merchant said that in the old days if you were undefeated almost all the people in the boxing community including fighters would tell you "Who have you fought and why are you being protected???"

      LMAO so true

Props to Gonzalez, I knew this kid was dangerous and had a good shot to beat Mares and made a thread about it.

I still thought Mares would pull it off but he couldnt come fight night.

I really cant see how Mares can beat Gonzalez though, its just a style nightmare for him, just all wrong for Mares.

Wonder if he will exercise the rematch clause, hope not I just dont see how Mares can beat Gonzalez.

Donaire fans loving this right now lol

Man now I know how the Pacquiao fans felt after Marquez put Pac out.

Last time I felt this bad was when my boy Margarito got destroyed by Mosley, man that one felt horrible lol

Margarito was on the cusp if not already the next JCC in terms of fame and then boom, **** got real.

At least you had the minerals to come out about it, Manny fans and Folyd fans (the hardcore ones) are incapable of humility, and would only give excuses if either fighter loses in the future. (again, for manny obviously, for the nitpickers)

Well done, I commend you for it.

Look at it this way, the loss will keep Mares humble, help him correct mistakes, and he will have paid his dues and this makes him more human and you can get behind him and support him even more. He will come back strong.

mares just needs to improve his defense..if not then he should avoid fighting guys who can outbox him and at the same time have the power to stop him in his tracks (i.e. donaire, rigo, mikey garcia, etc.)..

Mares got caught... he thought Gonzales was gonna throw the right hand and moved his right hand to parry the right cross, but got nailed by the left hook.

No doubt that happened because Nacho was in Gonzales' corner and Nacho knows Mares very well.

Mares had 3 strikes against him going into this fight:

              1) Nacho was in the other corner
              2) bad style match up... a swarmer (mares) vs a puncher (gonzalez)
              3) physical disparity... gonzalez is bigger than mares

all these things added up to mares getting KOed.

No shame in losing, but let's see how Mares comes back from this loss.

if there's a rematch... Mares would be better served not trying to parry punches, but to use his legs to get the fawk out the way of them pineapples.

If Mares is as good as I think he is, he should have no problem coming back from this loss. The fights where a guy takes a sustained beating are the ones that have the career damaging effects. This wasn't Liston-Patterson either.

At least it wasn't that type of career sustaining beating that ruins young fighters. It was quick and dirty, not the best way to go out but it was a flash and he should be able to recover from it, move back down to 122 as he is too small and doesn't have the intangibles to fight at 126 IMO

All he has to do is go back to punching people on the d*ck and he'll be back on top :blow:

If he ever fights Rigo mark my words get ready to count the 20 plus low blows and the goldenboy refs are like see no evil hear no evil.
