Hard to argue against it. He got hit hard the first time n the second time he went down, he hit the mat like a ton of bricks.
Mares vs Gonzalez WAS A BAD STOPPAGE

thanks bringer.
i still disagree.
he wasnt out of it, he still grabbed the ropes, he had a couple of blinks, he took his time to get up because he was badly hurt and i think that gave the ref the impression that he can no longer continue. The way he landed with his feet getting caught up made it look a lot worse.
My whole point is let him try to get up and see if he can continue. See if he has wobbly legs, see if he can stand up, see if he can follow instructions. Mares grabbed the ropes was preparing to get up and the ref didnt even let him try.
Yes he was badly hurt, but at least give him a chance to get up. Ive seen fighters in far worse condition be given at least a 10 count. The ref started counting, Mares started getting up and he stopped the fight.Comment

^At the end of the day, the referee's job is to protect the fighter at all cost. He did that, same when Alavarado was stopped by Rios, he was getting blasted by big shots from Rios and wasn't defending himself. I have no problem with this stoppage and Mares should just take a rematch, he needs to have better defense.Comment

While I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a bad call because Mares wasn't all there and ref has the best view of it .....
I have to agree that the ref should at least count to 10 then judge if Mares was OK to continue. Actually, if Mares did get up on time and looked OK, he would have made it out of the round ..... but as the TS stated, the ref did not give Mares the opportunity to be counted out.
I would understand if Mares was still up against the ropes and the opponent was freely punching at him but here we have a fighter which would NOT be getting hit until Mares gets up (if he can) and the ref determines that Mares is OK to continue.
Last week, Barker was down for almost the full 10 seconds count. He looked in bad shape and appeared that he was not going to be able to get up and continue the fight but he did get up and won the fight. Imagine if the ref stopped it because Barker visually looked like he was in too much pain?Last edited by ADP02; 08-25-2013, 09:48 PM.Comment

Should have gave him the 10 count. The ten count is there for a reason. This stopping it early when guys arent even out cold is non sense. See the gif in my sig? That's when you stop counting. There were ten seconds left in the rd. I wonder if the ref heard the warning bell?
I won money on the stoppage if you are questioning my bias.Comment
