Mares vs Gonzalez WAS A BAD STOPPAGE

Did not like that stoppage at all. Mares was getting up but the referee refused to even give him a chance.

Why dont you give a fighter a chance?

Let him get up, see if he can touch his gloves and see if he is able to follow instructions. To not even give him a chance is a disservice to Mares.

I hate referees like this guy and jay nady. Give a fighter a chance to see if he can continue.

He gave him a chance after the first knockdown. Mares was still out of it during the post-fight interview, he even admitted that the didn't know WTF he got hit with. You could tell by the look in his eyes that he wasn't there when he hit the mat the second time. The referee was wise to stop it when he did. Mares has heart like hell, but he doesn't know how to clinch and was clearly out of it by that point. He could've gotten seriously injured if the referee let him continue in that state, and with little to no defense.

Especially against a certified puncher like Jhonny Gonzalez.

Just watched the slow motion replays again. Not counting the hellacious left hook that Gonzalez put Mares down with the first time, Gonzalez landed 6 clean shots on Mares's face/head during his final blitzkrieg. Mares had no defense whatsoever.

I believe it was a good stoppage, just look after the 2nd KO which came from another left hook, Jhonny just got that straight right as he was falling down to the mat. His leg gives out right from under him, he could've broken it but didn't. Now the only way I can see someone saying it was a bad stoppage was because of the clock almost ending the round so Abner may have been able to shake out the cob-webs but in the end the referee's job is to protect the fighter, which he did.
