First round, Manny v Marquez & Mares v Gonzalez

Since some of you didn't think the comparison to the Chavez Taylor fight was valid, how about this one? Both in the first round, but one guy is given the chance to continue, even when it looks like he can't, Marquez actually lays on his back and covers his face indicating hes finished. The other is immediately jumped on from even trying to continue. Mares is doing the opposite, knowing he has to get up.

Why don't you guys say Marquez was finished based on what he actually did (laying down and covering up)? Marquez even looks surprised to see that the fight wasn't stopped. You'll be quick to say Mares was finished when he never really got the chance to prove otherwise.

The ref could've waved it off easily after that 3rd KD. But crap would've hit the fan though, because of that borderline illegal shot that put Marquez down. I wouldn't have complained but a lot would have

Or Trinidad vs Vargas is another good one.

Honestly I was thinking about that while watching the fight the difference being Marquez looked like he was conscious of his surroundings and even though mares was responding the look on his face after the second kd looked like a fighter who was ko'ed. Look in his eyes that is what I personally feel jack reiss saw when he waved the fight off. Rough loss but I still feel mares can def bounce back and become a world champion

Michael Spinks was given a full ten count. A full ten count. Why aren't refs doing that anymore? Stopping it immediately doesn't help the fighter anymore than stopping the fight after reaching 10. Stopping immediately doesn't help the fighter anymore after assessing the situation after the fighter gets up.

very good comparison, i think Mares should have been given the time he is entitle to just like every boxer, he was in the floor not receiving punishment, he seem to be getting up ref should have waited at least the end of the count

i still Gonzalez would have finished him, but see Marquez still manage to earn a draw vs Pacquiao

Mares didn't even have a chance to get up though. Looking at Marquez after the third knockdown, he laid on his back and covered his face. Hes incredibly lucky that wasn't interpreted as "I'm done". He struggled to get up, was allowed to continue and turned that moment into defining who he is. Mares was not even allowed to hear "FOUR".

I can't even remember the last time a fighter took a full 10 count...not at the top level anyways. I don't mind it much that a ref waves the fight off but if a fighter beats the count as a champ, you deserve to fight on, the ref can step in and stop it if it gets worse.

Like the Donaire/Montiel situation. Down hard, but beat the count and earned the right

they were different kinds of knocksdowns to me. the first 2 for marquez, he got put on his ass. the 3rd knockdown he was still kind of on his feet and had 1 arm on the ground and then pac threw that dirty shot that put him all the way down. even then he still didn't appear very hurt. i always interpreted the covering of his face as "oh man, i am fucked on the cards and it's still only the first round "

with mares, that first knockdown was a pretty good shot and he was hurt bad. as soon as the fight continued you knew that jhonny was gonna put him down again. you could tell he was hurt even more on the 2nd knockdown with the way he fell back with his leg still under him. he didn't have control of his body while he was falling.

basically, i think in the marquez fight he was put down by the force of the punches and not so much because he was hurt and had no legs. he still had control of himself during the falls.

would not mind seeing mares vs gonzalez 2

can't even compare the 2 one had weak legs getting up and you could see it in Mares eyes he was **** up. the other still had his legs under him even with the cheap shot Pac took on JMM when he was all ready down on his kneels you could tell he was still good to go
