He was going to fight Gomez on the undercard of The One, but then he got the call to be in Expendables 3. He's now looking at November or December.

      Alfonso Gomez??
It's a fight that makes sense for both fighters. Victor is coming off two bad losses, the last one in which he had his jaw broken, and he's had a very long layoff. There is also the detail that his best win in Berto looks a lot less impressive now and his last loss in Lopez has since gotten beat up by Canelo and stopped by Maidana. Basically, Ortiz was overrated anyway, and expecting him to face a top tier guy right off the bat is a big ask.

For Gomez's part, he's also coming off of two losses and has had a long layoff due to injury. He's basically a fringe world level guy that wants to get in the mix of serious contenders at Welterweight, and a big name win over Ortiz even as things stand would go a long way towards that goal.

Gomez vs Ortiz if it goes down would be a high-action, fan-friendly fight without question, and like I said before, it would surprise me if it was anything less than competitive and Gomez pulling the upset is very possible. Physically Gomez isn't the best athlete, but he's a much better boxer than Ortiz, he comes to fight every time, and he's tough with no quit in him. Ortiz is there to be hit and for all his physical gifts is a headcase in there, who knows if he'll even have a gameplan or how he'll react when Gomez is consistently tagging him.

As to the Cotto vs Gomez fight Bullet Charley, Gomez came into that fight coming off a serious illness in his training camp and also had a partially broken hand going into it. Since that fight, he's been better, with a clear win over Jesus Soto-Karass in 2009 and giving Saul Alvarez one of his toughest fights in a somewhat sketchy defeat back in 2011. He lost his last fight to prospect Shawn Porter in July 2012 but it was a FotY candidate. If the fight gets made, at the least the fight will be competitive.
And the fact that his opponent was levels above him in every way.

Yea, but Gomez got balls... besides Cotto, all of his bigger fights were at a weight class or 2 above.
Dude's a WW, but fought in the MW Contender Series and got third place.
Almost fought JCC Jr. and fought Canelo.

He's a good gatekeeper/Journeyman, just not elite or anything.
He's a C-class fighter that proves as a good test for upcoming prospects

In his prime he was a respectable fighter who would make most guys work for their victory. Nothing truly special, but he like you said, he had balls and fought hard. Canelo stoppage was BS also.

He did way better than those cards said...
but yea, he's getting older now and his dreams of fighting for a championship are probably gone.
He was my favorite from the contender and sad to see he's probably done.
