he probably doesn't deserve it, but he's 25 years old, he's probably as ready physically as he'll ever be.
On a side note, what does anybody know about this Jamaican featherweight Nicholas Walters? I see he's got a good record with sold power. Any chance he gets a shot?

Why are some people against Russel fighting for a belt? These are the same people that keeps saying:Russell needs to step up,Russell is a p^$$y,he`s being protected. But when he wants to step up,now all of a sudden he`s not deserving of a title shot.I see that some of you are just crabs in the barrel haters, who just wanted to have something to complain about.

Stepping up doesn't equal title shot. How about just a live fighter that can bring something to the table. Get a couple of victories against a few top 10 guys and then a title shot. Thats how boxing works right?

It doesn't look good when a fighter gets a title shot without taking the steps to earn it. Going from TBAs and journeymen to a titlist who has just scored arguably his biggest win isn't logical progression. The match-up itself is fine, the fact that it's for a title Gonzalez just won makes it seem like he's being used as a stepping stone. If Russell loses, what does he have to show for it? He hasn't beaten anyone relevant, he just looks overrated afterwards.

Exactly. **** doesn't make any damn sense.

One minute its "Russell is a bum. He fights TBA's"

Now that they propose Russell vs. Gonzalez its turned to "Russell doesn't deserve this fight, he's fought nothing but TBA's."

That's because the reason he's fought TBA over and over is to protect him until they could hand him a title shot. Whether he's good enough or not isn't the point, that's unfair to the other guys earning shots but not getting them.

Did people have this same problem with Santa Cruz getting a title shot? Even worse becoming Terrazas' mandatory challenger.

At least Russell is a WBC ranked top 5 contender and has been fighting featherweights. You see fighters all the time picking ranked contenders to defend their titles but it only seems to be a problem when its Russell. This goes on in boxing all the time but there is only outrage when the fighter has a "name" or fights on a network. If I remember correctly Gonzalez needs to fight Castellanos (#1 contender) within the next year and he can make voluntary defenses against anybody in the top 10 or 12 I think.

If this fight makes the most financial sense for Jhonny Gonzalez and puts him on a U.S. network than its the fight he should take. If he gets a better offer from Mares, Donaire or whoever else, that's the route he should go.

That ****** too. However, he beat Terrazas with ease. Russell should follow suit and make Gonzalez look like he doesn't belong in there with him. All will be forgiven if he does well.

Russell has a ton of skills but his fragile hands should be testing against a non-tba first but he needs to sht or get off the pot in some form. How many top fighters can he turn down though? People are assuming he will accept the Gonzalez fight but has already turned down what 3-4 top fighters. Russell should have one top contender fight and see if his hands are okay and then go for a title fight. I hope his hands or mismanagement doesn't derail him because he is a genuine talent.
