Comments Thread For: Photos: Pulev Earns Klitschko, Defeats Tony Thompson

Schwerin, Germany - In an IBF final eliminator, Tony Thompson (38-4, 26KOs) was coming off back to back knockout victories over highly regarded David Price, but his momentum wasn't enought to overcome the talented up and comer Kubrat Pulev (18-0, 9KOs). The scores were 116-112, 118-110 and 117-111 for Pulev. The Bulgarian heavyweight is now in line for the winner of October's title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin.

Pulev's biggest win to date. He boxed clever and kept the pace as Thompson was gassing during the middle rounds. Thompson's age showed last night, but it was great to see Pulev go 12 rounds with a veteran and display the quality he has.

However, it was such a boring fight. It won't endear Pulev to more casual fans and - whilst he did show good maturity - he didn't exactly showcase great technical prowess so he doesn't have that to appeal to the hardcore fans either.

Basically if you weren't a Pulev fan before this fight, you almost certainly won't be after it.

Good name on his resume though.

A nice win & well deserved title shot. I can't recall the last time a guy had to win 3 eliminators & have 3 top contenders turn down this fight...

Pulevs face looks like a n american bulldog.
Nice win. Not enough to earn a Kilt shot. Needs another scalp from what would prob end out being one of the small heavyweights.. Since that is all that is left talent-wise

I agree that Pulev is limited technically.

But he does deserve a shot at Klitschko, he's certainly a tough guy and there is no harder fight for Wlad out there at the moment.

I disagree, Pulev has offered to fight many people like Tyson Fury and Tomasz Adamek for the right to be the IBF mandatory contender to Wladimir Klitschko, why should Pulev wait around when other contenders are clowing around when given IBF eliminator bouts against Pulev they refuse the fight?

Pulev was a decent amateur, a unbeaten european champion and has just beat a top 10 contender so why does he not deserve a shot? What did people like Pianeta, Wach and Jean Marc Mormeck exactly do to get a title shot? They have way worse heavyweight resumes than Pulev but they get a pass? Pulev is nearly 6'5 it is a viable fight and not a bonafide mismatch against a cruiserweight.

Good win for Pulev. If he has any technical deficiencies it is that he can't or seems to refuse to fight on the inside. I thought Randy Neuman was a little kind to him when it was obvious that Thompson was still fighting on the inside in the clinches while Pulev did the headlock thing to try & get Neuman to break the clinches.

He'll do well against Klitschko but still lose. Wlad's jab & straight right have too much steam on them & Wlad will not be backed up by Pulev's average power. Pulev has great conditioning though, he looked like he was just getting into his work at the end....bring back 15 rounds for championship & top contender fights I say.

Pulev looked terrible, didn't even know how to throw a combination and finish off a dead man for the last 4 rounds. Are the only punches he knows the jab and the straight?
