It says nothing about that. He got tagged by a puncher with power in the first round. it was a good shot that hit flush. Even the best get tagged and hurt. Mares's problem is that he didn't know how to deal with being in that position. Nobody knows their reactions until it happens. Even Gonzalez emphasized that in the interview (though it didn't really translate well).

I don't see how this is a bad thing. If anything, it calls for an immediate rematch, or better yet, for Mares to further prove his stature as a pound for pound contender by fighting other guys who could prove a challenge. He doesn't need to be a champion for that. In fact, if present champions continue in their ways, it would appear that being a champion today is a bad thing as it tends to do the exact opposite in supporting good opposition.

time will tell, but I won't hold this loss against him, under the circumstances. Good win for Gonzalez, though...it elevated him when he needed it most.
