Yeah, if you watch those old videos of boxing in the early 1900's, they used something close to 4oz. gloves. I would assume that part of that early, elbows forward, bicycle-motion style is born out of the need to slip and parry shots from someone wearing smaller gloves.
Look at Jack Johnson's fights. You'll see them in those types of smaller gloves. What you and your friend were talking about was essentially the 1900's happening again.
