I think he lost to Maidana at a stage when he was a very different fighter. He said many times how thankful he is for those "loses" he had. Seeing how they stole those fights helped him find a new drive to destroy his opponent.
Like Monzon, opponents are just thieves looking to steal from his daughter... and Matthysse loves his daugther very much.
It says a lot of how he fights when he explains he hardly recognizes himself when watching videos of his fights. The guy goes up there to kill or be killed, thus the impressive KOs we've seen. Monzón said that, but there was a real murderer inside him. Monzón life was full of violence from start to finish. He was a killer on the ring and in life. He beat his first wife, murdered his last one and went to jail. When he got a permission to go out in weekends, he died in a car accident.

Matthysse's life has been totally different and I don't think he has that murderer / self-destruction drive Monzón had and made him a truly assassin on the ring.
