  • Comments Thread For: Frank Warren on Rolling The Dice With Cleverly-Kovalev

When managing and promoting World class fighters, there comes a time when you have to roll the dice to determine whether they're exceptional or just simply very good.

That time has arrived for Nathan Cleverly this evening. The Welsh light-heavyweight will enter the ring as a marginal underdog with the bookies for the first time when he makes a sixth defence of his WBO title against formidable Russian ****er Sergey Kovalev at Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena. Both are unbeaten so, as they say in this trade, somebody's '0' has to go. BoxNation televise live.

It's not hard to see why the odds makers are sceptical regarding 'Clev's' chances of retaining.

Comrade Kovalev, aptly known as 'Krusher', has ko'd 19 of his 21 opponents, with 18 left seeing stars inside three rounds. [Click Here To Read More]

People in the U.S. don't like the (amateur) Russian school because they don't understand it... The Russian school never produced professional showmen -- that's its main weakness... It only produces "militarized" fighters...

It took a while to get that Frank Warren himself wrote this one...
        Like preparing for his mémoires...

Frank Warren classifies Nassem Hamed vs. Steve Robinson as risk taking.

That explain British boxing in a nutshell.

I can understand where Warren was coming from as he stated Nas was only 21 and had never fought at featherweight at that point in his career and fought in Robinson's hometown with nearly 20,000 fans, even though Robinson was not unbeatable he was a credible featherweight at that point in time with a belt and was seen as a step up in class at the time for Nas.

If Cleverly goes down this weekend, it's another blow to British boxing. It's a pick em fight for me though.

Most of us would rather our fighters take risks and fight the top fighters as opposed to holding a belt hostage against nobodies and fringe contenders for 10 years.

Cleverly's had what? 5 or so defenses and is 26 years of age and he's already fighting a top level guy and as good as anyone Calzaghe faced in his 21 defenses except maybe Kessler.

I hate the guy but he has a fair point in that he's got a lot of these gambles right. 90% of the time he's a horrible **** but I'll give him credit for delivering the goods in that other 10.

Oh I completely agree man. It's just funny because Dirk is hyping up Cleverly on here in not a terribly big way, but he's hyping him up. Kovalev is a tough fight for Cleverly, so we'll see what he's made of. It was time for Cleverly to fight someone legit, though he did fight Bellew and Murat right???
