  • Best jab in heavyweight history?

Here's my take on a list over the greatest jabs in the history of the heavyweight division.

    1. Sonny Liston (people got their teeth knocked out by his jab) - he had that jab that really smashed his opponents head back.

    2. Larry Holmes - Not as powerful as Liston's but look at the Norton fight how he doubled and tripled that powerful left hand in quick succession. Nobody does that nowadays or since.

    3. Prime Rid**** Bowe - Probably more powerful than Holmes' jab, but not as quick. It was a hammer, look at his fights vs Holyfield and Tyrell Biggs as an example. Even when he was fat and out of shape vs Golota he still had an awesome jab.

    4. Muhammad Ali* - Probably the quickest jab in history, but thrown technically bad. He really developed his jab late in his career, as in after Liston, where he started to understand the true value of the jab. he threw it from the side, almost with side of his hand, but started to get the grasp of it just before he was put in excile.

    5. George Foreman - Hugely underrated jabber. Look at his fights vs Tommy Morrison, Shannon Briggs and Michael Moorer as examples. Smashed it right in their faces, like a straight right. Also developed late in his career, as in after his comeback.

NOTE: *Ali could arguably take 3rd. And notables that missed out were Joe Louis, Lennox Lewis and Wlad 00-05.

Wlad has a pretty solid jab. LOL obviously

      I've voted Holmes though

Many people have a solid jab. A jab is rated on how well it does. Jabbing and stepping back is just a waste of time, which is why a lot of people were so frustrated with Lennox and also Wlad.

Not many fighters would survive being jabbed by Lennox or Wlad for 12 rounds. I wouldn't call it a waste of time.

After a few rounds of being jabbed they become less mobile for sure. That's how Wlad takes them out.

And that is exactly why it's frustrating. Nobody wants to see someone getting jabbed in the fact for 8 rounds before they finally get the courage to throw the right hand - It's just dull and not exciting at all. Lennox got the same criticism and I agree with that too.

And also, look at the way these guys jabbed - 1 jab was enough for them to completely open up for a right hand smash. Wlad has to jab 300 times a fight to do that.

              between ali, holmes, and liston

ali's an odd case. his jab was best when he could get on his toes, and that was generally pre layoff. post layoff he had his best wins, but his jab had lost osme of it's effectiveness. he spend a lot of time on the ropes and holding.

liston had the hardest jab, and holmes was a great boxer puncher behind his jab.

Well this thread has taken a U Turn

Makes a thread about who has the best Jab, criticises people he's listed in the nominations

What I meant by Wlad having a solid jab was, yes most people use a jab as a way to set up the right but Wlad uses it as a way to control the pace and distance of the fight, if he's flicking that jab out at you (and no doubt it's a ****ing powerful jab) then it's immobilising whoever he's fighting from getting into range and striking, his jab is also part of his defence, hence why I was calling it solid, because that's how he uses, and that's how it works for him.

Weather you find it entertaining to watch or not is another matter entirely.
