Comments Thread For: Schaefer: Talk of Mares vs. Leo Santa Cruz Premature

It’s only natural to wonder about a potential fight between Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz. Mares is a 126-pound titleholder who also held belts at 122 and 118. Leo Santa Cruz is a 122-pound contender who previous held a title at bantamweight. Both are with Golden Boy Promotions, and they’ve shared Showtime broadcasts twice.

They will do so for a third time on Aug. 24, when Mares defends his title against Jhonny Gonzalez and Santa Cruz challenges Victor Terrazas for a junior featherweight belt.

But it’s not yet time to put them together, according to Golden Boy Promotions executive Richard Schaefer. [Click Here To Read More]

he's right. it is too early. leo should take on more live guys before a mares. gbp has given us nothing but fights as of recent.

this has barrera / morales written all over it.

Its almost like Richard is...what's that thing you do to meat? You soak the meat, you immerse, you douse, you preserve, you do something...

It is too early. This is not like the Gamboa-Juanma situation.

Leo needs more experience for this to be a better fight.

I don't want to see this yet. Let Leo Santa Cruz build up his name a bit.
