Comments Thread For: Team Kovalev Expect KO Win if Cleverly Trades

NATHAN CLEVERLY has been warned of the dangers of getting involved in a toe-to-toe battle with KO specialist Sergey Kovalev.

Cleverly makes the sixth defence of his WBO light-heavyweight title against the big-punching Russian, at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on Saturday night.

And Kovalev’s trainer John David Jackson, a former two-weight world champion himself, believes the Welshman is likely to become his man’s latest quick-fire victim.

Kovalev has put 19 of his 21 victims out on the canvas and Jackson is convinced Cleverly will be No.20.

He said: “Sergey can match Nathan for boxing – but no way can Nathan match Sergey’s punching power.

“If Cleverly’s dumb enough to stand with us, he’ll get knocked out. Once Sergey lands a big punch, I expect Nathan to go on the retreat and attempt to outbox us off the back foot.

Team Frankenstein is overconfident, as expected. Clev might need a miracle.

Kovalev is a beast. He's gonna make a lot of new fans fighting on HBO. I re-watched his fight on NBC and dude has skills. He's got the footwork to get in and out and he throws 6-8 punch combos on the reg. I hope Cleverly throws back and makes it exciting. His amateur pedigree really shows. I'm hoping he puts on a really good show and HBO takes him under their wing like they did Triple G and develop him. HBO seems to be going the way of international fighters, why not this Russian monster?

Kovalev in no monster -- he's the mobile power impersonated (as I said several times before)... This is the the old Soviet boxing school; it seems minimalist but it's deadly precise.

Yeah that's what I mean. Kovalev has really good balance and either boxes 50/50 or slightly on the back foot. He's upright for the most part and doesn't seem to punch himself onto his front foot when he throws the right.

Is GGG old Soviet boxing school? He's got good footwork and precise punches...

Of course Golovkin is old Soviet boxing school either. But in my opinion Kovalev is more balanced, stronger and more talented than GGG (even if GGG has quite a reputation in the U.S.)
My secret wish is to see Kovalev (and not GGG) fighting the big Andre Ward...

Heard Kovalev had issues with GGG in sparring and they had to stop sparring each other.

Kovalev said that "Golovkin hits like a sledgehammer"

Really? I just remember Abel saying something like Kovalev wasn't what they thought he was... or something like that.
