Rios with his big mouth is more marketable and will help sell the fight better than Alvarado. That's basically what it boils down to. I would have been fine with pac facing either fighter. They both have wins over each other with Rios having won by KO while Alvarado won the rematch by close decision.

Let's also not forget that both Bradley and Jmm turned down pac.

pac just went with the one fight he felt would be more exciting for the fight fans ..plus pac just got brutally ko'ed so if he wants to fight an opponent thats more tailor made for him then **** it...and it's not like rios is some soft opponent, he is going to push pac to his limits and we'll definitely see how much of pac is left..
      Who has ever said that?

Because he win his last fight?
Because Rios will bring the Mexican fans to China, being as he's more marketable?
Because Alvarado has an idea of how to slightly adjust?

could be one, if not all of those reasons maybe

What really happened is Mike wasn't showing up to his rehab appointments for his hand after surgery from the 2nd Rios fight. Arum and co. were worried that if Mike kept not showing up, there was a possibility he wouldn't be ready.

Mike has a reputation of being a party animal and maybe that contributed to him missing his rehab appts. No way were they going to sink all the money, time, and effort into a promotion without it being a sure thing. Seems like Mike may be to blame for being passed over on the Pacquiao fight.

“Well, it was sort of a toss-up between them,” said Arum. “What really tipped the balance was that Alvarado injured [his] hand in the Rios fight and it was a relatively serious injury that required him to have surgery. And we talked with the doctor who conducted the surgery, and Mike was neglecting his rehabilitation of the hand.

“We felt that because it was such a momentous event in Asia, we just couldn’t take a chance of announcing a Pacquiao-Alvarado and then Mike had to pull out because the hand wasn’t fully healed,” Arum added.

Yet hes throwing Mike in with Provod? Too fishy for me to take seriously.

Provodnikov, and the promotion/cost/etc., are a tad different than a fight with Manny. Never was anything said regarding the difficulty of opponent for Mike (Manny was to risky for Mike, Provodnikov isn't), it was based off Mike missing intial rehab appts. Looks like he began following through and the Prov fight was able to be made.
