Comments Thread For: Cleverly: Beating Kovalev Will Get Me The Big Names

I was 11 years old when I became a boxer. It was in 1997 when I sat on the sofa with my Dad and we watched Joe Calzaghe become world champion, that’s when I knew it was for me. My parents took some persuading but they understood that it was what’s best for me, I was an ultra-competitive child and it led to a few sc****s and scraps on the streets.

I was brought up in an area called Phillipstown, it’s known by the locals as Monkey’s Island and it’s in the South Wales valleys. There were few facilities and even fewer opportunities, that’s why we produce so many fighters - nine world champion boxers have been born and bred in the valleys.

My upbringing was good, I have a strong family behind me and good set of values that kept me out of trouble, most of the time! From an early age, sport was the main focus in my life. When I was 15 I became Welsh cross county running champion and I’ve always been a good footballer, I’m active in other sports but it was boxing that took over my life.

Yes it will. Cleverly has been ignored by the big names for a while now.

Kovalev is the house fighter in this matchup despite it being in Wales. HBO are sending him over to bash Cleverly up and become the next GGG. If Cleverly overcomes this, he's the new star.

IMO both guys have a chance of becoming a star...

I truely think cleverly is very underrated,,, i like the kids toughness and work-rate...

I think he would cause hopkins alot of problems had they fought,,,

I will be rooting for cleverly to win this fight,,, he reminds me of a young joe calzaghe, that may seem crazy but thats how i feel,,,,

either way, winner becomes a big name, and actually both guys careers could take a huge boost if its a great fight

HBO are backing Kovalev. They were showing his next fight regardless of who the opponent was.

Doesn't matter if it's in Wales. American TV sent Gerald McClellan over to beat up Nigel Benn in London.

Dawson is down and out and Hopkins won't stick around much longer
LHW is heating up and it needs a new star
think Cleverly will win this, and he's right if he does so impressively
Cleverly vs Stevenson, Froch, Cloud, Pascal-Bute winner, all sound good
if Cloud was to beat Stevenson for the title, would pick Cleverly over him
