Comments Thread For: Chemito Moreno Resumes Bantamweight Dominance

By Cliff Rold - Returning to the ring and his regular weight division after a ten-month layoff, 28-year old WBA “Super” Bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (34-2-1, 12 KO) of San Miguelito, Panama, notched the eleventh successful defense of a reign that began in 2008 on Saturday night at the Megapolis Convention Center in Panama City, Panama, earning a wide unanimous decision over 27-year old William Urina (24-3, 20 KO) of Barranquilla, Colombia.

Moreno came into the bout a pound under the division limit at 117. Urina weighed in at 116. The referee was Stanley Christodolou.

Moreno was never really challenged in the fight. Able to establish his southpaw right jab early, Moreno stayed largely in the pocket and dished out a beating to the body. Urina’s left eye was bruised underneath over the course of the fight but he never stopped trying. A desperate play in the final two rounds helped Urina stave off a shutout, but his second title shot ultimately proved as futile as his first. [Click Here To Read More]

I've said it many times: Anselmo Moreno is the most underrated fighter alive and has been for some time. The fact that Mares was able to beat him that way is a testament to Abner's elite p4p skills, grit, and ability to adjust.

I thought Moreno did really well down the stretch against Mares. That was a good fight.

I would love love love to see Moreno-Santa Cruz.

mares clearly won the fight with moreno. does the writer mean maybe a round closer when he says much closer than the judges scores?

Do you even know what the judges scores were?

He never said Mares didn't clearly win but it was a close fight.

I agree,it was a close fight..It seemed like Moreno found something out about Mares late in the fight to..I remember giving the late rds to Moreno..Can't remember off the top of my head,I remember feeling like,I wish they'd bring back 15 rds..

Don't be a daft ****. That fight should have been just a couple of rounds max from a draw. Very close fight that the judges had much too wide. Moreno took most of the latter half of the fight after a much too slow start.

Anyway...glad he's back. Great fighter that should have had more time on the big cards.
