You've referred to Facing Ali twice in this thread, so I'm assuming that's where your coming up with these opinions...My question is where in that book does Holmes say things like that, because from what I'm seeing from the book are comments like this from Holmes;Originally posted by Joe MinghiaLarry Holmes said that Ali was just as good as he was against Liston when he fought him. He then states that Tyson only beat him when he was shot, see the hypocrisy?
Class act my ass, he kept bashing on Ali's achievements in Facing Ali and said "****" and "****" every sentence.
"I didn't want to fight him either. At thirty-eight years old, you're old." (in reference to Ali's age)
"I knew Ali couldn't beat me in 1975, so what was he going to do in 1980?" (in reference to Ali's decline over five years)
"Y'all probably didn't know it, because he tricked everybody. He looked good. But sometimes the mind makes a date the body can't keep." (in refrence to Ali's physical condition)
Just three quick quotes from Holmes that obviously are his admittance that Ali wasn't nearly at his best, and I can't find one quote in that book where it says otherwise.Comment

I don't know if it was from that book, but I know he said some foul stuff about Ali in there. I'll try and find it later, could be from another reference though but I am 100% positive those were Holmes' words.Originally posted by YogiYou've referred to Facing Ali twice in this thread, so I'm assuming that's where your coming up with these opinions...My question is where in that book does Holmes say things like that, because from what I'm seeing from the book are comments like this from Holmes;

He does diss Ali a little in the book, but that was in regards to Ali's "alleged" lack of discipline in training and whatnot (and he isn't the only one who says that, belive me). But he also says other things about Ali like; "He was a great man.", "Maybe I can't be as good as Ali", "Ali was one of the greatest." etc., etc...He questions Ali's training practices, but after a quick browse over I can't find too much to discredit Ali, and he certainly doesn't give himself full credit for defeating the depleted version of Ali that he fought...Originally posted by Joe MinghiaI don't know if it was from that book, but I know he said some foul stuff about Ali in there. Are you sure you aren't getting it mixed up with what Holmes said about Norton in the book?Comment

I remember specifically when I was reading the last chapter on Holmes that I was quite upset at some of the stuff he said, hmmm...Originally posted by YogiHe does diss Ali a little in the book, but that was in regards to Ali's "alleged" lack of discipline in training and whatnot (and he isn't the only one who says that, belive me). It must have been in an interview or another book I read cause I'm certainly not making any of this up.Comment

There could be something Holmes said in Facing Ali that might tick off an Ali fan, but I haven't read the complete chapter recently and only offered a few quotes from it today after doing some quick browing...I'll read the whole chapter later on this evening and maybe I can find something else that I missed the first time over.Originally posted by Joe MinghiaI remember specifically when I was reading the last chapter on Holmes that I was quite upset at some of the stuff he said, hmmm...

I watched Holmes on Beyond the Glory and he said that Ali was old. He admits that and I don't think that he enjoyed beating an old Ali either. Many fighters have had to fight older opponents that they respect and many regret (or at least say they do) having to do that. Marciano supposedly cried after the Louis fight. Holmes and Ali were friends from the days when Holmes was a sparring partner for him.
Holmes was very underrated as a fighter and now he is a bitter old former fighter--don't expect him to be a class act when talking in print or on TV, we all say things we don't mean when we're pissed off.
And for the record, I think that a prime Holmes would've done to Tyson what Buster Douglas did. On that night, Buster fought a lot like a young Holmes.Comment
