Comments Thread For: Matthysse's Trainer on Training, Improving, Garcia's Skill

Some boxing trainers are placed in the spotlight almost as much as the fighters they train, even if it is not of their own choosing. In recent years Freddie Roach, Robert Garcia and Virgil Hunter have come to the fore, particularly as they have trained many top class fighters and world champions.

As hard-hitting Argentine Lucas Matthysse continues to rise towards the top of the sport, his trainer will likely come under more scrutiny from boxing fans and television networks.

Luis ‘Cuty’ Barrera has trained Matthysse for his entire career. He first came to his attention when Lucas was competing for the Argentine Olympic squad and the young power puncher came to train in Junín, in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.

Barrera himself was a former fighter who lost to Chris Eubank in the final bout of his career and had 17 knockouts out of 35 victories. Now the biggest battle of their career awaits on September 14 as Matthysse faces WBC and WBA super champion, Danny Garcia. [Click Here To Read More]

Both fighters will be well trained and in shape because that's what good fighters do. They train hard and fight well. Hopefully Matthysse can pull it off, although I think Swift if the more sound boxer of the two.

Barrera seems like a really cool guy. He's humble and respectful. I like the fact that he made it known that he feels Danny isn't scared. He even gave Angel credit. This is going to be a great fight.

It's going to come down to whether Lucas can punch hard enough to get Danny's attention. Swift CAN take a good punch. He's been in with holt, Judah, even Khan was hitting him pretty hard.

It's weird with Garcia because he has always seems to rise to the occasion. They thought he would lose to Holt, and Khan but he didn't. I think If Matthyese shakes him up an breaks his confidence an puts doubt in his mind he will win but If Garcia feels like he can take Matthyese power is confident in his own power he will outbox him. Danny hits pretty hard himself and is a big boy..and he'll probably come in pretty heavy fight night for Matthyese around 156 possibly more

Lucas takes Dannys 0 in 6 rounds or less.

Good read. "Cuty" sounds like a very humble and nice guy, it's refreshing that in era where trainers are craving the limelight as much as their fighters are, you have a gentleman who rather work quietly in the background. Matthysse has a good and positive trainer crafting his talents.

I completely disagree, Lucas is the better boxer and busier guy. He doesn't necessarily need to make Garcia fear his power, he can simply rack up more rounds by being more effective on offense. On the contrary, Garcia is gonna have to land something big enough to catch Matthsse's attention and demand his respect.

Matthysse team as a whole has been doing a good job and they know this is a very hard fight. A marginal note about geography: Junín is not "in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires". It is a city of the province of Buenos Aires. The province of Buenos Aires is not the city of Buenos Aires (capital of Argentina), much like the state of Washington is not Washington DC.

There's a reason why they want this fight so bad. They see something in Garcia, the same thing we see. The same way Rigo wanted Donaire so bad, he saw something in his game and he knew.
