Duran only beat Sugar Ray Leonard because Leonard stood right in front of him. You failed to discredit that guys point. The fact is Duran couldn't handle anyone who would use defense or circle around the ring. Once Leonard used movement in the second fight Duran couldn't do ****.
this is true but the thing is its schewed. because no fighters fight at their natural weigh class anymore. even back then, leonard and hearns were probably natural swws more than they were wws. just the way its become.
That's because boxers no longer weigh in on the actual morning of the fight. When you're forced to make weight that close to the actual fight, the chances of you putting on 10-15 pounds are incredibly slim.
The notion that Leonard and Hearns were anything but natural welterweights while they were competing at that weight is ******. If they weren't, they wouldn't have even been competing at that weight in the first place.
Benitez in SRL fight would kill Mayweather
May had good chances to win decision over Duran in 12 round bouts
If 15, this would be a late round slaughter
The way I see it, the boxers of today are far more evolved than the boxers of yesterday. I see ordinary boxers today do far more advanced **** then the guys in the Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler era. That's just how it works. 20 years from now, fighters will probably come up with more advanced training methods and techniques that we don't know about today. If Floyd fought in Durans era with his style right now, I think Floyd would still be dominant because his style is advanced even for today's era. I do agree that there were more competition in Duran's era.
Exactly. Anybody who had Oscar tied in that fight or anyone who thinks Oscar won, I immediately tune out as either biased or ignorant. For those wanting to pin a defeat on Floyd, go back to the Castillo fight, but even that one, I'd score it as a draw worst case, and Floyd was fighting with a bum shoulder, and Floyd won their next fight to eliminate all doubt.
Floyd won't be truly appreciated until after he is gone, but kids 10-20 years from now will look back at his era the way kids look back at the SRL's, Duran's and Hearns' careers. May and Pac are living legends, and they'll get their due respect down the road; especially Floyd. He'll retire the all time PPV King, and possibly 50-0, and as the greatest defensive fighter to ever lace them up.
That puts him in the top 5 ATG P4P conversation, imo.
That fight was boring, and hard to score so don't say anyone who has it for Oscar or a draw doesn't know jack. Floyd fought super cautious against a faded Oscar.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. came into the ring after Mayweather vs. De La Hoya, hugged his son, and hugged Oscar, and gave the opinion that he felt Oscar won the fight. So I guess Floyd sr. don't know ****?
The bolded shows your ignorance. You've obviously never even seen the 2nd Duran/Leonard bout, and are merely reciting the bias pro-Leonard opinion you've seen on Ray's 'Beyond the Glory' episode, or have seen others spew here.
The second Duran/Leonard bout was actually quite close and competitive at the time Duran quit.
As for what Duran said, I disagree somewhat. I do think Mayweather is a special fighter, but he most certainly wouldn't be undefeated if he was mixing it up with the fab four. Nobody goes through those guys with their record unscathed.
Look, son, I'm 45 years old and watched the 2nd Duran/SRL fight live...just like I watched the SRL and Hearns fight live at my Dad's friend's house fight party. Just like I watched SRL in the 76 Olympics when I was 8 years old. Just like I watched Tyson coming up. I was 20 and paid 40 dollars for the Tyson and Spinks PPV and had 15 friends over for it, etc...
don't tell me shidt, kid. I suggest you go back and watch that 2nd fight again, and you'll see SRL dancing, boxing, and mocking Duran to the point where Duran quit because he couldn't deal with it any longer. SRL outsmarted him, and Floyd would have done the same thing, but countered him better than SRL.
If they weren't, they wouldn't have even been competing at that weight in the first place.
so do u think that leonard and hearns are the same size as floyd? what age did floyd reach ww? where were leonard and hearns fighting at that age? both clearly outgrew ww because they were quite big for the class. this isnt even really that strange
I like Roberto, but Floyd would school him fairly easily at 147. We're talking about a guy who couldn't win the majority of his big fights. He quit against Sugar, got knocked out against Tommy, and got beat up by Marvin and Benitez....and Sugar again. I won't even bring up Camacho as those took place far out of his prime. Anyway, outside of Barkley, Roberto couldn't beat the best in his era. And he wouldn't beat Floyd.
