I personally think Vitali quitting against Byrd was one of the most shameful things I ever saw in boxing. Merchant was correct, he did not display the mentality of a champion and to Ali's credit, he was tougher in this sense because he fought on with a broken jaw etc etc! I get it.
But for Christ sake anybody with any sort of basic analysis and observational skills would see that it is physically impossible for Ali or Louis to win.
I mean JAB, you just compared Vitali with Carnera. I've seen him of course and I have to say that comparison just exposes your complete bias. Carnera is a complete oaf whit no appreciable skill whatsoever, comparable to maybe Nikolay Valuev. Vitali Klitschko is a highly skilled, technical giant. You don't go 45-2 in todays game, hardly losing a round and never being knocked down by being anything less than very special!
Let me tell you the REAL secret of Ali and Louis's success...
Ali outweighed 70% of his opponents and little Louis 90%! Of the ones Ali was outweighed by he still out ranged most of them!
So you see a more reasonable explanation for there success is that they are BIG BULLIES! The opponents who were much bigger were by and large absolute oafs with no appreciable skills whatsoever!
You said Louis beat Carnera, I say big deal, what decent HW could not beat Carnera today!
Louis DID nearly get KTFO by Danny Devito's grandfather though and beat by a 193lb Schmelling. To that I say "What HW today would be threatened by these guys?" Not a great many I should judge!

And you have no idea what you're talking about. Both fought with their lefts held low. Both moved around awkwardly, almost clumsily. Both backed straight up when attacked instead of applying any kind of learned defense. Both brought the left back low after throwing the jab. Neither applied any kind of decent body attack. Both fought with their feet spread further than should length. The biggest difference though....Carnera had more heart. So my point remains, Joe Louis never had a problem with big men and wouldn't have one with Vittles.
PS - You're welcome for the education.
