The thread was asking if they took up boxing instead of the sport that they played. So it means if they started young and it was the only thing they ever did.
The reason why there aren't too many American fighters now is because there are more options to make money in other sports. Those athletes that were going to Boxing before are now going to Basketball or Football or anything else.
