I honestly did not expect Mares to look that strong at 126, after seeing what he did to PDL...I gotta lean towards Mares now. I think Santa Cruz is more coordinated, I like his offense better than Mares' but Mares' ruggedness, the fact that he's willing to do anything to win...I have to favor him.
I think this is the fight as well, I think it can generate Matthysse-Garcia-like interest. Maybe we get a trilogy?!
Mares has shown some serious versatility, boxing when he has to, and pressuring when he's had to (he fought Moreno brilliantly). It's really hard to go against Mares right now but Santa Cruz is a problem man. I love to watch him fight. Santa Cruz's boxing style is about as classic as you'll find. He tucks his chin, keeps his hands up, dips and just goes to work and stays busy.
I'd pick Mares, but I think this fight goes to decision and is very close.

the way he systematically broke down DPDL was nasty...and Sta Cruz is like a mini-Margs on crack
this indeed could be the next great trilogy...someone tweet GBP
Mares.. He's shown he can adapt to any style and the fact he tko'd pdl was really surprising . Santa Cruz would make it a war though so it wouldn't shock me if he pulled it off its just hard to bet against abner mares
A testament to Santa Cruz's underrated status...only Mayweather and Canelo have a better Plus/Minus rating than him. Not Ward, not Rigo, not Lara not Wlad have a better Plus/Minus than him.
Great fight. These are two of my favorite young fighters right now. Right now I would have to lean towards Mares. He has proven himself against excellent competition and his toughness can't be questioned. In a year or two, I think this would be a tougher fight to choose though. Santa Cruz is steadily improving. I just love his commitment to body punching. It seems to be a lost art nowadays but the guys who do it are almost always successful.
