Comments Thread For: Nacho: Mares vs. Gonzalez Will Not Go Past Six Rounds

According to veteran trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristaín, the featherweight match between Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KOs) and Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8, 46KOs) will not go beyond six rounds on the 24th of August at the Stubhub Center of Carson, California. Nacho is training Gonzalez for the fight. Gonzalez lost his WBC featherweight title to Daniel Ponce De Leon last September with a technical decision verdict, but Mares knocked out Ponce in May to capture the belt. Now Gonzalez gets his opportunity to capture the title from the man who beat the man.

Mares is a handful in the 122 - 130 weight classes. He can box / **** / bully , counter etc.. starting to appreciate his skills more and more - Agbeko / Yonnhy Perez / Anselmo Mareno / Vic Darchinyan / ponce de leon - I think he will be too strong for Gonzales.

Mares is a mature thinker. i saw his forward movement against the slick De leon. mares chin was tucked, head movement and he moved forward with baby step. its difficult to know what a fighter is going to do. thats why mares is so successful.sometimes its not about throwing a punch.

Mares imo is more a P4P fighter then Donaire. Mares has the fought the toughest guys and passed the test each time. THE most underrated fighter in boxing.

I hope Rigo can come aboard for that fight !

Jhonny is lacking a bit of "stamina in the jaw". Nicely put Nacho lol

Gonzalez will have a size advantage, but Mares will find a way to pull it out.
