Cotto's mechanics have deteriorated so much that I think that Roach can help him a lot. I think if he had Roach after Evangelista his career would have been much different, IMO.

I think at this stage in miguels career he cannot learn or implement anything new. It's more of a case of getting a trainer in who can motivate him to train hard and push his body (bare in mind miguel doesnt like to train and needs motivating for some fights) and to implement a gameplan that suits his style.

Cotto's at the point in his career that he's his own boss and I highly doubt there is much more he can change until retirement. I see him just going out there for the pay checks these days and not much else. He was awesome in his prime and a heck of a lot of fun to watch (and still is), but I don't see him competing at the highest level anymore. The most Roach can do is SHOW him something he hasn't seen before. Doesn't mean he's gonna use it or will be effective though...

I actually agree. To me once he left his uncle he looked unsure of his identity, should be box behind his jab and use his pretty decent footwork or continue to press the action and wear his opponents down? he chose the box route but didn't have the defense or evasive skill to pull it off when pressured (Tony 1 and Manny Pac) I thought he looked great against mayweather because it seemed he went back to type and put the pressure on and worked everything of the body attack which served him so well in years passed.

It all depends on the opponent. Against big dangerous mofos, cotto was best served by Diaz, focusing on the boxing to a decision. Against others tho, where cotto should hold his ground and bully, I feel roach will serve him good. Roach will lay out a good game plan and train him right....in those instances.

For instance, against guys like canelo, Marg II, etc.....Diaz.

Against guys like Bradley, Marquez, etc.....roach.

His strategy against Trout was totally poor. When he did crowd Trout, he had some success but he waited too long. He also looked gassed. He doesn't seem to be too alert in the ring and takes too long to adjust. Could be he is not getting proper corner advice. Could still be a big force in WW.

The only thing Roach is going to help Cotto with is taking a beating. Roach is just so overrated it's not even a joke anymore. I understand everyones love affair with Pac (indirectly with Roach of course) but Pac would have been just as successful had he trained with anyone else. All roach teaches is overwhelming offense and Cotto is past that point. Roach fighters have zero defense and no plan B's. Cotto just keeps changing trainers but he needs to look in the mirror and realize the issue are not his trainers. If Steward and Diaz can't help you, you really think Roach can lol? Good luck Cotto, get the smelling salts ready.
