im sure floyd would have many more supporters from his own country if he wasnt such a nob, taking "retirements" whilst the fans wanted him to fight the best. it is what it is.

gone are the days where boxers were on wheaties boxes.... but i believe USA will back ANY respectable boxer that reps USA with pride. lets not act like floyd is apollo creed. LOL. floyd is a hustler... USA starves for that "rocky" underdog-type fighter to inspire... so when an urban trash-talking "boring" boxer shows up with a polarizing persona, its no surprise he wont get the pageant queen treatment.

andre ward is a potential candidate for that squeaky clean gold medalist that media and USA can get behind... sadly, persona's like "money" mayweather seem to be the only way to sell tickets at the moment. right now, the 'merica demographic is currently dedicated to MMA.

floyd treats boxing and his fans as a hustle... he makes money and bails... "floyd" & "sacrifice for fans" have NEVER been used in the same sentence. so of course american fans wont show loyalty to him...

Muhammed Ali sure rep'd America with pride and America loved him for it didn't they? When he didn't fight USAs war and spoke his mind, did they care that he won them a gold medal? Only when it was all over did people really understand what he sacrificed for people who like to watch violence but would never partake in it themselves. Can you imagine the heat he would've caught if the internet existed? Especially during his classy promotion with Joe Frazier.

Mayweather was that guy and was drawing 300k for PPVs and getting a pittance from Arum. I guess conforming just didn't work for him.

sadly, floyd's fighting style doesnt sell tickets to casual fans.... so ellerbe and floyd came up with the "money" persona to sell.... add dancing with the stars & WWE, 50 cent, then BOOM! demographic precision.

you are right, "pretty boy" cant sell like "money". although "pretty boy" was a beast in the ring though.

Your previous point was interesting and I agreed with a lot of it. I was just trying to point out h9w fickle the public are, especially boxing fans. One minute Marquez is a respected fighter. He knocks out the wrong guy and all that goes out the window. Mayweather could've remained "Pretty Boy", stayed at 135lbs and called out DLH and Mosley while being a beast and selling moderate numbers. They would've continued to dismiss him and no one would bat an eyelid. He did what he had to do and some might get riled by the persona without ever truly knowing the man while others just respect what he's capable of.

It doesn't matter what race you are if you impress. Other countries seem to have national pride, but don't give a damn if the product is good or not. At least how I see it.
Yeah people lean toward nationality when rooting for a fighter but also in the US it is about where your from, what City/State. Like for example a East Coast Fighter won't draw as well on the West Coast and a West Coast fighter might not Draw as well on the East Coast unless you just a crossover star like Mayweather or Pacquiao

I don't have no problem when people "ROOT FOR THEIR OWN" but a lot of times PRIDE brings a lot of IGNORANCE and things start to get racial as seen on this forum and when their "OWN" starts to losing to particular fighters that really starts to bring out a lot of HATE and Racism that is the downside of picking fights with your PRIDE and not your BRAINS. Fans become too emotional attached!

Who was the last American fighter that had America behind him and they supported him? Ray Leonard Maybe? Oscar in his PRIME had America behind him but sadly his Mexican Fans hated him during that time, especially when he started calling out Chavez and after he beat a older Chavez

Floyd has a country. If lots of people in his country don't root for him it's his own fault. He can't expect people to root for him if they don't like him just because they live in the same country he does.

This is absolutely spot on. I imagine Floyd feels a type of jealousy for his opponents because of this. Floyd has fame and fortune but he doesn't have a National fanbase, he isn't and never will be a beloved figure in this country. He will be heralded for his Capitalistic gifts, but he will never know a fraction of the love that Manny Pacquiao enjoys.

I'm a boxing fan but I'm also African American, so I see Floyd with different eyes sometimes.
