Comments Thread For: Cleverly-Kovalev Finalized For 8/17, Reasons Explained

Kathy Duva, CEO for Main Events, has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that a deal has been reached for Sergey Kovalev (21-0-1, 19KOs) to challenge WBO champion Nathan Cleverly (26-0-, 12KOs) in an HBO televised fight on August 17th at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. The fight will be packaged with HBO telecast of Daniel Geale defending his IBF middleweight title against Darren Barker.

Kovalev, who earlier this week became the mandatory challenger to IBF Bernard Hopkins, will now get replaced in that position by Karo Murat, who previously held the spot. Murat was scheduled to face Hopkins in a Showtime televised main event on July 13th in a mandatory fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, Murat was unable to obtain a visa. Murat filed an appeal to obtain a visa and it was believed that several months would be involved to get his visa. As a result, Golden Boy Promotions was forced to cancel the July event.

Very good news, a match-up that deserves an HBO slot imo.

Good fight. I wonder how much Kovalev is getting paid.

Great news and I'll glad the fight is just around the corner. If Kovalev prevails we could see him face Hopkins later this year!

nice fight. respect to cleverly for stepping up, but i think this will mark the end of his stint at the world level.

Where are all the people that said Cleverly would never take this fight then?

From what I gather from all that, Kovalev just wants a meat sack in the ring to pound on. He does not care which one it was. He just wants any of the belt holders quickly.

If there was ever a time for Ward and Froch to move up, it is now. Lt Heavy is starting to come alive again. Lots of fun matchups. 168 is dry now.
