Comments Thread For: Macklin Preferred One More Bout Before Facing Golovkin

Matthew Macklin has only fought one round in the past year, and though he would have preferred having one more bout before challenging middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin, he wasn’t going to refuse this shot.

“Initially I wanted to fight in June and maybe fight Golovkin in September, but at the end of the day the opportunity was there,” Macklin said on a June 19 media conference call in advance of the bout, which is taking place on June 29 at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.

“It wasn’t necessarily going to be there at the end of the year,” he said. “At this stage in my career, I’m not in a position to turn down world title opportunities.” [Click Here To Read More]

Yes yes, and when you become a good boy next week, it'll be because you didn't have enough fights

Macklin is bad ass. He gave Sergio absolute hell and should have got the decision over Sturm. He's not an easy out for anybody, Golovkin included. Macklin is the underdog for a reason but he is easily GGG's toughest test as a pro. I expect a competitive fight.

^^^ This here. I thought I was alone thinking Macklin has a good shot at beating GGG.

sadly that wouldn't have made a difference imo. best of luck to mack the knife, but the likely outcome of this fight is a golovkin tko. macklin will most likely give golovkin a good tough fight for as long as he can, though. hopefully it's an entertaining fight.

Macklin's performance against Martinez is kind of overrated. I thought he only won two clear rounds and he did very little damage if you take the fight as the whole. Although, I also think his chin isn't as bad as made out to be either. Getting knocked out by Jamie Moore probably had a lot to do with going back down to 154 and being weight drained. His body was completely spent when it happened. Hopefully that nose operation helped his with is conditioning so he stands a chance in the later rounds. (if gets that far)
