All the time I'm thinking, you know, Clevs a decent fighter, a beltholder, there's guys whose opinion I trust saying, yeah, Clevs gonna take this, he's too quick , good chin, skills etc. I'm thinking I must not be seeing something, IDK?
In the end, I get 2 seperate windows running side by side. Cleverly vs Bellew and Clev Vs Krasniqui looping on one side, Kovalev vs Boone, Thompson, Campillo and White looping on the other.
The level of opposition is not far off, in fact, with Campillo and White, I'd sorta say Kovalevs fighting the tougher guys. But, anyhows, a reasonable comparison of the two fighters' respective talents.
What did I learn?
Hmm.
Well, I think Clev's got his work cut out. I would say he should box kovalev, distract him, don't giv....then one on those combos knocks any thought of strategy from Nathans mind. After another round of back-pedalling in sheer survival mode, Nathan hits the canvas for the first time. Jelly legged he hangs on for the bell.
His corners advice barely penetrates as he starts to understand he cannot win. Rising to his feet he starts to operate on instinct, his jabs connect but seem to have no force in them to repel the relentless punishment landing in threes and fours, up and down, he covers tight and tries to duck and weave. catches one, two to his head, then a jarring impact to his body. Time slows for a moment as Clev straightens and catches a looping left to his jaw which sends him down for the second time.
This time there is no bell to come to his rescue. Time is hard to judge. Impossible even. He knows they can't have reached the mid-point of the round, gritting his teeth he calls on all his...a flurry of punches from every angle drive out all thought of resistence..thudding on and around his guard, backpedalling he's caught flush in the stomach then straight through his loosened guard snapping back his head. Somehow he's on the floor again. The ref in front of him..he can hear the counting and struggles to his feet..what number is it? High? six, seven...tries to clear his head as the ref comes close, takes his hands firmly - 'you okay? you wanna go on son?' He nods, though the voice sounds strange, like he's underwater.
Time comes back, the ref is looking at him, closely, judging..he nods again, firmly, pushes up against the refs grip, just aware of the waiting shape in the opposite corner...'m'okay, m'okay' he hears himself mumble, suddenly realising he doesn't want the ref to leave his side, feeling suddenly alone.
He raises his guard for what he knows must be the last time, senses the ref hovering close, the rush of movement in front of him, feels his guard brushed aside and the strength leave his body as the punches hammer into his ribs, cheek stomach and chin. On instinct he stays on his feet a few seconds longer before the canvas rushes up to meet him again.
Anyhows. Kovalev TKO3.

Why does Cleverly want to fight Kovalev so badly in the first place. HBO must of offered him much more bank for that bout than any other.
