Kovalev is already being heralded as something special despite not beating anybody of note, and Cleverly has been written off by the fans for a long time. This is almost a win/win fight for him.
It's a little farfetched HBO would be shipping their trucks to Cardiff for Cleverly Kovalev. Not impossible, but you'd want it coming from HBO and not Frank Warren lol.

I think this fight is legit. I don't see Kovalev trying to go for Bhop on showtime. Airtime on HBO has opened up now so i would expect them Duva to get him and the rest of the stable on there. Cleverly is probably the best option for a few reasons.

It's a triple header. Geale vs Barker is one of the other fights. Cleverly and Kovalev are potential future starts and HBO are severely lacking those at the moment.

This is Frank Warren man, there's usually a catch. Why would he put his #1 guy, undefeated and highly protected Cleverly against a guy that brings no money or name, except on message boards?

And then you gotta buy into HBO wanting to go to Wales for these 2 guys, doubtful.

I though Geale Barker was gonna be in the US. Either way, definitely not on a Warren card, Barker is Matchroom

It is in the US and it is Matchroom. Cleverly-Kovalev would be shown earlier in the day and probably later on tape delay whilst Barker-Geale would be live. I can't remember what the other fight is supposed to be. August 17th is the date.

Gotcha, so tape delay. That's not really having HBO onboard, the fee they pay is much lower in that case and they don't have a full production crew. But at least it makes it a little more plausible. Still, hard to give Warren the benefit of the doubt, especially with Cleverly so far, with all the callouts, then turning around to fight bums.

Who should he have been fighting? Fights with Hopkins, Froch and Shumenov have fallen out through no fault of his own. Its not like LHW is a deep division.

There's about 50-100 spots between those 3 and the bums he's been fighting.

I agree, there's usually always a catch with Warren. However, recently i think he's been getting a little desperate. This is one of the few fights HBO would be interested in, and you know they pay good money. HBO would most likely have commentary from the states and not actually go to Wales.
