Comments Thread For: Naazim: Mayweather Fight Will Tell us if Canelo is Special

There always seems to be something special about having a conversation with North Philadelphia-based trainer Naazim Richardson.

Regarded as somewhat of an intellectual Zen master by those close to the sport, Richardson is in Carson, California this weekend, as he will be leading underdog Demetrius Hopkins into battle against hot prospect Jermell Charlo as part of a Showtime-televised tripleheader from the Home Depot Center.

Throughout the week, Richardson has been fielding questions from the media about different aspects of the fight game.

Canelo isn't special, but Floyd is treating him like he is with the CW.
Canelo just about beat Trout, so that is a solid win, as good as anything Floyd has done really. We wanted to know if Floyd could beat Trout, but instead we found out Canelo could.

You are only as good as who you beat. So Floyd is beating the Guerreros of this world and looking good. Canelo looked ok as well in his last fight.

Floydie has talent, but until he meets the best without whining about it, he isn't the best. Besides SRR is widely considered the best because he took on everybody, sometimes in fights a few WEEKS apart. Canelo will indeed (FINALLY) be Floydie's biggest test. As for if that makes Canelo special, we'll haveta see after he's fought a few more top guys post Floydie.

I honestly don't believe Canelo is Floyd's biggest test. I still think that was 154 lb De La Hoya. Canelo fights in spurts and tends to gas out in later rounds. His hand speed is good but not great. Although his defense has improved somewhat, Floyd shouldn't have a hard time finding him.

Canelo only threw a bit more than 400 punches in his last fight against Trout, which is in Floyd's wheelhouse. Canelo fighting in spurts will allow Floyd to take advantage during those breaks. Floyd's superior stamina and hand speed will have him easily taking the later rounds against Canelo.

I give Alvarez a "punchers chance" and that's all in this fight.

Leonard retired at 25 in the prime of his career. Sure he had some big fights with some big names but dont act like he took on all comers. From 1982 to 1988 he had one fight.
