  • Comments Thread For: BoxingScene Update: Pound for Pound List and Review

Halfway through the year, it’s as good a time as any to take a snapshot of the best of the best across boxing’s seventeen weight divisions.

The previous list, last updated on December 30, 2012, ranked them:

    1) Andre Ward
    2) Floyd Mayweather
    3) Juan Manuel Marquez
    4) Sergio Martinez
    5) Nonito Donaire
    6) Manny Pacquiao
    7) Carl Froch
    8) Abner Mares
    9) Brian Viloria
    10) Wladimir Klitschko

In the six months since, seven of those ten men have gone to scratch with Donaire and Viloria suffering defeats at the hands of Guillermo Rigondeaux and Juan Francisco Estrada respectively. Only Ward, Marquez, and Pacquiao remain inactive to date in 2013. Marquez and Pacquiao have fights scheduled. Ward, recovering from shoulder surgery, in expected to be in action by the fall. I agree with everone on the list, except Roman Gonzalez, I think Mikey Garcia should be there instead. Im happy to see no sign of canelo or adrian.

roman gonzales does not belong on this list. smh. and i think its about time we start admitting that floyd should be over ward. i mean im a huge fan of both. but ward has been too inactive and floyd is already about to fight again after beating guerrero. i think hes still #1 at this point.

        I rate Andre Ward highly.

However... how on earth can you justify putting him P4P #1... above Mayweather, above Juan Manuel Marquez, above Pacquiao even.

Andre Ward has not traversed weight classes. He's not fighting at light heavy and dominating. All these multi weight world champions and he's above them, P4P, when fighting at his ideal weight class? Mayweather could be fighting at 140. Pacquiao, JMM at 135. They go up because they cleaned up, and have bigger fish to fry.

Andre Ward's "bigger fish" was pulling a guy down a weight class.

He is an incredible boxer, obviously very skilled and obviously the best current super middleweight in the world. Best P4P? Let's see him get out of his comfort zone first. Hell, he barely even leaves his home town.

Floyd Mayweather is hands down my favorite fighter, but I agree that right now Ward should be ranked higher based on his level of comp. You don't need to leave your weight class to be the best.

Ward over Mayweather. Christ sakes. The guy has fought at one weight and Mayweather has been fighting guys out of his weight class for years.

            Viloria just lost.

            Awful list.

How is Rigondeaux above Froch and Mares, when those two have put in more work? Lets be realistic here.

                  Thought provoking list for sure.

                  I'd switch Mayweather and Ward.

Rigo is too high for me I'd switch him with Martinez.

Gonzalez at 9 is interesting. i'd have bradley there mainly because I am not familiar with all of gonzalez comp.

Compare Ward's recent competition with Mayweather's and it's not even close in who's fought the better competition. Mayweather may be the better fighter, but can you really have him at number 1 due to his recent wins? I suppose it all depends on how you choose to rank people in these lists, but I'd personally have Ward at #1 with Mayweather #2.
