If boxing really gets big there with Zou Shming and Pacquiao relocating his boxing career there it could really be a massive change to boxing. Think of all the talent China could bring to the lighter weight classes.
Could China be Arum's biggest achievement?

Arum didn't do **** for China.
Zou was already big there. He won his medals and earned his name. Zou contacted Arum when he wanted to turn pro, Arum didn't go to him. If Arum could have convinced Zou to turn pro when he was younger, then maybe you could say that, but he did **** all other than pick up the phone.
Boxing had already been growing in China for around five years now. It had some positions on some minor networks and many amateur competitions have been shown on major Chinese networks. Back in 2008 I remember hearing one small time fight on a smaller network pulling something like 60 million viewers.
Prior to Zou turning pro, Xiong had already gained massive media attention in the country when he fought for the first chinese title in a stadium event.
Arum is the one persona who has massive potential to ruin all this. He didn't get Zou onto Chinese TV, Zou was already there, but what does Arum do the moment after he comes in? He decides to take Zou off major TV and stick him on internet PPV. Arum has literally slaughtered boxing's over all exposure in the country literally moments after entering the country. He also fails to realise that the Chinese don't like the Philippines. They are literally in an arms race with them. Just because Manny is well known in the country it doesn't mean they're going to buy his PPVs. This is like trying to sell Carl Froch to Ireland.
For the next big fight in China I am going to make a thread following all the online trends in the country. I have followed them for the last Zou and Xiong fights, and the trends have been pretty big in China. So from now on I'll make a thread to record the info to later prove how much attention these fights are getting. -
Arum going to China is smart in the long run.... 40-50 years from now he will be given credit for bringing big-time boxing to China....
I think it will only enhance his legacy,,,
Hate or love him, Arum has done major things in boxing, Like the Foreman comeback, building Oscar, Floyd, Pavlik, Morales, Manny, Chavez Jr just to name a few,, All the superfights in the 80's etcComment

How many PPVs could you sell in China, India, etc. now? How many ten years from now?
Giant populations and rising median incomes?
If it catches on, Asians could become the main audience. There's just more of em'.Comment

Bob Arum is the Vince Mcmahon of boxing. When you look at all the stars he made in the last 20 years alone is very impressive. From De la Hoya to Cotto to Pacquiao to Mayweather. Most of the draws of today are/where from his stable.Last edited by AnimalisticMeth; 06-02-2013, 01:02 PM.Comment

If he keeps using internet PPV. **** all. If promoters become content with chipping off a small chunk of a big pie, it runs the risk of boxing leaving the major markets to make more money in a niche market.Comment

Well of course, Arum can't make boxing popular in China. The best he can do is be in the position to strike when the iron is hot.Arum didn't do **** for China.

And running a ppv is no joke, especially the first ppv ever in a boxing hinterland like China. After all these years GBP still can't stage an independent ppv in the US, for example, not to mention grade B promoters.Comment

Good info. Thank you. Did not know any of that.
Well, knew about China and Phillipines having disputes and so yeah it figures that it might be an uphill battle to sell Pac to the average Chinese tv viewer if you think about it (hadn't really til' this excellent thread came up). Wonder if that has anything to do with the effort to change the format to internet rather than tv? Maybe Bob thinks a younger generation may not be carrying quite the amount of xenophobic baggage and that their elders are carrying?Comment
