Right. All Bute had to do was beat Froch and he would have got his shot instead of trying to vulture and only having to beat Ward to become unified/lineal champ at 168 without putting in even 1/8th the effort that anyone in the tournament did.

Career wise it would have been better for Ward to beat Bute and put an end to the hype. Even though Bute came in like a vulture he still had the name value, and there weren't exactly a lot of options for Ward out there. He ended up having a fight cancelled with Pavlik and fighting Dawson ( a light heavyweight at 168lb).

Instead he allowed Froch prestige to grow.

Add to that Ward didn't even want to fight #2 Bute, while Froch handled him no problem. Instead dragging down Dawson who got worked over by Pascal and KTFO by Miranda in sparring?
