people spoke on the gold as a "bad investment," which it is. he overpaid. he didn't buy $14,000 worth of gold.

gold is a good buy, but you've got to get it for the right price.

I know we're talking about two different things, which I pointed out. He didn't overpay if he's talking about how his grill is 14k (as in 14 carat gold). Because if he did, then he didn't pay $14,000 bucks. And that's likely what he meant. If he meant 14k as in 14 carat gold, then he could've spent as little as $1000, $2000. But yeah, in time, the value will go up.
